Can a motivated individual successfully start home-based business on a shoe-string?
On a shoe-string means either debt-free at start-up or with bills that can be paid out fully as soon as proceeds from sales begin to flow.
I would say yes, as long as you have things to start with. I'll give you an example, about 3 years ago I started a side biz. Roto-tilling gardens. I already had a tiller and a pickup. All I did was put a ad on craigslist. A non-threating ad. It read like this. Roto-tilling service. E-mail the town you live and the sized to be tilled and I will e-mail back a quote.
I think they can start a home-based business on a shoe- string budget, if they are willing to trim down spending to just the necessities.
Sure! The thing to do is not to quit the full-time job until the part-time one can completely and consistently replace its income. As the others have pointed out, the more you can do with equipment and supplies you already have, the better. I've done both -- bought equipment to start a biz and started one with what I already had. The shoestring biz is the one that lasted.
I believe it is possible, but very difficult. Usually it takes some kind of seed money to get started,
