Pensions: Should workers expect to receive them?

Because of the recent news topics concerning the Chicago teachers strike and the NFL, I was wondering how many of you have pensions and if a person should expect a pension given todays' economy. Further, is it considered greedy or selfish to fight for something that most people do not have or assume the rights to a job if you under-perform.

No they shouldn't expect them unless it was promised upon hire in which case the company should honor their word. People should be saving and investing their money on their own to prepare for retirement. No one should expect money from an outside source in order to retire.

If you paid into a pension then you definitely have every right to expect it.

No. It ties you to one specific employer, regardless of their need for you or your opportunities elsewhere. You should be well paid and free to invest and save on your own. A job is not a right, nor are you a slave to your employer.
