There are a lot of books on this subject. Rich Dad, Poor Dad is one of the more well-known ones for the average person. I would say the three main keys to success are 1) experience (or at least a vast knowledge) in whatever it is you are getting into, 2) writing a realistic business plan and 3) hard work. The unwritten truth in my experience is that it takes a lot of hard work, energy and patience. Typically entrepreneurs who are successful immediately do so because they are being backed or promoted in some way by a larger company or because they had to royally screw someone over on the outset (like their former employer or a partner).
