Corner Shops, Large Shopping Malls and now Online Shopping

Changes in our shopping habits over the years

l remember when my children were small, holding a thick, heavy, glossy catalogue in my hand. l was very pleased with myself as l´d become an agent for the company for the 1st time.

l was always looking for little jobs to work from home , so that l could be a full-time mum but still earn a small amount of money. My husband earned the main share.

Catalogues were a good idea for people who wanted quality goods but could not afford to pay out a large sum of cash all at once, but they COULD pay a little each week , regularly.

These catalogues sold everything from womens and mens clothes, to childrens´clothes and toys, to furniture or tools... Almost anything you could think of.

The more customers l had, and the more money they spent, naturally would mean the more commission l received.

l once left my commission with the company until there was enough to buy a three piece suite.Very nice it looked in our sitting room and l felt as though it had cost me nothing , although l´d earned it., because the work was so easy.

Years later, the corner shop began to evolve into larger stores, the huge shopping Malls as we have today, and now we do not even have to leave home, because we can shop online.

My brain would prefer to go to a huge shopping Mall with a friend or 2., trying on shoes, jackets, everything. Then stop for a chat and some lunch, then away we´d go again scouring all the other shops.....Sadly that only happens in my mind these days, my body won´t allow me to push my way around busy shopping centres for more than an hour. Ladies, as we all know an hour is hardly worth the effort of getting dressed and driving there

´We have a wonderful alternative, in todays modern world. We can switch onto our screens and in a few clicks we are in a wonderland of shopping without moving from the comfort of our own homes..... shopping online..

Online shopping is a great boost for people who work long hours each day and hardly have time to shop. Also for elderly or housebound people and people like me , who now live in such a tiny place that l can walk down to the river and feed the ducks, but l can´t go to a large store because there simply aren't any.!!!!! It would cost us more in petrol/gas to get to the nearest big grocery store than i does to shop online and pay for it to be delivered.

l must admit l am so happy that my husband loves cooking and now loves buying all he needs online. Yippee!!! He´s welcome to that job.!

i´m still quite new to online shopping but Amazon books are a wonder in themselves.

l´ve recently got used to the delights of scouring pages of dresses, shoes, coats,, all the wonderful choices that pass before my eyes on a computer screen. (not much different really from looking through the pages of a catalogue all those years ago.

A friend put me in touch with a site i´d never heard of recently called

l could hardy believe the choices and the affordable prices for such quality goods.

l should have known, though. Before we moved back to Britain, last year, we were surrounded by new Chineese shops opening up all over the place. They sold perfume, jewelry, makeup, anything for your hair even wigs.! Everything for your nails .....childrens clothes, the store seemed to go on forever when l went into my 1st one.

It was difficult to walk past one of these stores, they were so colourful, lots of Oriental things , but lots and lots of European things too. l was so disappointed to come back o Britain and not see any Chineese shops. So it was with great delight that l typed into the new site hhtp://,......... l was certainly not disappointed.!!!

Nothing can really beat a day out at the big stores with a girlfriend but if it´s not possible for any of us. , then online shopping is the way to go. Delivered to your door and you can send it back if there´s a problem. What more could we girls ask for.?

l quite agree that there are many internet scams. l was caught out with one myself.

You have to be very careful, l think.

The best sites to use are the ones recommended by a friend who uses internet shopping on a regular basis.

When l feel fit enough, though a vast shopping Mall is favourite. Love the atmosphere.. hubby sits with a coffee or a pint and waits. Recipe for happy marriage. Hee Hee,

Micky and I are still on same track--hah. Loved this hub, Dim. Enjoyed the time travel and your fun at getting something you worked for but felt as if you hadn't because you let the money sit there! Ah, but if we could do that now!

Hi Micky, good to see you... Don´t know if there´s a goodwill Store online, but if there is I´ll be sure to find it. I buy most of my clothes from charity shops.

Thanks for riding by. Hope you are well.

    love, Dim x

I love every hub you produce dear Dim. Is there a "Goodwill Store" online? That's where my money goes- if I ever have any. God bless you dear Dim.

I prefer going to the stores to do my shopping because you can see what you are getting before you buy it.

Dim Flaxenwick, I agree, it is too tiring to go to the mall! Besides with the economy what it is, I have to watch every drop of money I spend! The gas to get there alone is a hinderance! Then there is the nag of a lower back ache from all that walking around on the hard flooring. Ouch!

I prefer shopping nearer to home, the thrift shops, (where I have learned to barter), and online, where the competition is huge, (I was looking for a coconut purse online lately and found prices ranging from outragous to dirt cheap), and ideas are everywhere!

    Great article my friend!

OoooooH !! It´s always so nice to see your smile , especially on a Monay morning and my 1st visitor.

Thank you so much. Have a good day too.

    Good Morning Dim,

I forget about the choices of on line shopping. I should really do more. I am such a home body now and I dread going to the crowded stores. Thank you for a great hub and reminder of the choices out there.

God Bless and have a wonderful Monday.
