QUIRKY - Brainstorming Ideas

Updated on March 27, 2015

Quirky - A Design Community

Quirky is a gathering place for people who like to put in their two cents worth. If you've ever had a good idea for a product or if you enjoy contributing to innovative notions, visit Quirky and see what it's all about. You can earn money online with Quirky depending on your input, your influence of a product's outcome, etc.

At Quirky, you can participate in all phases of product development. From the beginning when an idea is first proposed, your input is encouraged to tweak and shape the product. Continuing through the stages, you can take part in product naming, creating taglines, product research. Some members are provided first samples and asked to submit feedback to Quirky.

I choose to only take part in collaborating on those items that truly interest me which keeps the whole process fun. Currently I'm working on a product suggestion of my own, but for now I spend probably 30 minutes a day at Quirky scanning the new suggestions and overlooking progress on the products I've already taken an interest in.

Several Quirky products available now are featured on this page. Amazon is just one of the retail partners to Quirky, as is Bed, Bath and Beyond, Target, etc. Next time you see a product that seems innovative and fresh, pick it up and look at the tag. It's a good chance it's Quirky. :)

By the way, this photo is of me attempting to open a bottle of wine on New Years Eve. I was improvising and used my power drill and bit to extract the cork. (Not recommended.)

My Big "Invention" (from the Irie Archives) :)

Bulletin Board LampShade

haha You may have first seen this on eHow back in the day. My original article is not there any longer. (I guess they just didn't think it was as brilliant as I did.)

This lampshade was a thrift shop redo. Black spray paint, circles cut from an old cork roll and a hot glue gun. Perfect for people living in limited spaces. I should have submitted the idea to Quirky long ago because currently there is an idea for a lamp shade with cork, bands around the middle AND whiteboard. I too think it's great for dorm rooms, etc. and yep, I voted for that idea. :)

Why Didn't I Think Of That?

Kramer's Coffee Table Book Invention - It's the coffee table book about coffee tables; it's an American classic!

Kramer was a truly quirky character on the television sitcom, Seinfeld. Who could forget his appearance to promote his book on "Regis & Kathy Lee".....

Pet Rock - NO, Quirky DID NOT Produce This - But I bet they wish they had....

The Pet Rock - Classic Invention of the 1970s

The ultimate profitable "invention" of the 1970s (well, probably the forever ultimate profitable invention). But, hey, the Billy Bob teeth were pretty cool too, huh? :) (Photo credit MSN.com)

I Was Too Late for These Inventions - sigh :( ......

  1. Standing in Line. (Remember John Travolta claimed this honor as the angel Michael in the movie of the same name, 1996)
  2. Drive-through windows. (Clever concept which hastened the expansion of the average American waistline.) uh oh.....
  3. The saying, "I wish I had a dollar for every time I blah, blah, blah". (Seriously though, if I DID have a dollar for every time I heard this expression I doubt I'd be sitting here writing online. I'd be out on my yacht eating the freshest lobster and drinking the finest champagne.)

The Inventor's Notebook: from The Creator's Notebook Series
This is the type of notebook that is perfect for people like me. My thoughts are often so scattered and if I don't commit them to paper immediately, often times they are lost forever or at least until I think of them again. By then, it could be too late and someone else may have beat me to the patent office. The style of this notebook is informal yet organized well for brainstormers including a section on inspiration. Yes!!! :)
