Writing Tables for Your Home Office

Updated on June 5, 2015

Writing Tables or Library Desks

Working from home is a choice that many of us make. Writing is always part of any business. Writing tables or desks create the right place and space for you to do your best work.

We do not need to give up the loveliness of beautifully crafted wood furniture to have a functioning desk. My husband had a beautiful library table that he used for a desk for many years..

These lovely tables are simple lines, giving you the space for thinking and writing; They are thought-provoking in design and in the every day duties that are carried out on them.

Traditional Writing Desk

Traditional home offices can be charming, filled with handsome, comfortable furniture. Sometimes, people get carried away and have just too much furniture in their office and their house. Don't you just want to tell them - 'you have too much junk in here - get rid of half of it...' I know that I do from time to time.

But the pictures above show a beautifully appointed home office that you would love to spend your time working in such an environment. Soft light coming through the windows during the day time allows you to be able to creatively spend your time.

The writing desk here is of the same style and made to match the furniture pictured with the large executive desk. The desk is strictly up to you - which way do you want to work.

I love either one - but lately I might go with the writing table and the big desk - both if I had room.

Shaker Style Office Furniture - Build it Piece at a Time

If you are working on a budget, and who is not these days, you might need to build your office one piece at a time. The simple styling of Shaker furniture lends itself to that.

Adding pieces when you can, you can build quite an impressive office space in your home. By combining writing tables, bookcases and file drawers, you can size your office to your room - large and open or small and confined. Personal home offices are just that - personal. So make it work for you. Sometimes starting with a simple table, chair and computer can be the beginning of a big thing - and that is your independence!

Italian Style Is Comfortable

Knowing what you like can be as simple as sitting down behind a large executive desk and saying yes - this is what I want. One home office that we had started out with matching desks for the two of us. In a different home office, my office was separate, I started with the big window and I found a desk that filled the space Everything in that office was designed around the window. the view was breath taking. Some days it was hard staying on point when all I wanted to do was stare out the window.

Your office is more than just a place where you work - you think there, create there and thinking takes time and quiet - with or without music. Sitting behind a large, spacious desk gives you the feeling that you do, in fact, control your destiny. You can create your business direction and product; you, in the beginning, are the one that makes all the decisions.

You set the tone of your office. I would recommend that you buy the best desk that you can afford. If you are on a small budget, consider a simple desk. I have used chrome shelving for computer and printer space. You can use these wondrous fun tools for bookcases, TV stands and so much more. All for a very reasonable amount of money which can fit into any budget.

You can always have a used desk

Something Old . . .

The desk above is called a ghostwriter's desk for good reason. No one uses a typewriter any more. My grandchildren have never ever seen one. But it brings out a very good point, who said that your office has to be furnished with new furniture?

For many years we have a brick and mortar store in technical services. When we first started we found a great second-hand store that specialized in office furniture. We had the best time, looking over all their desks and chairs whenever we needed another desk set for the office.

When you are setting up your home office and you are on a budget, look for used furniture stores in your area. Many times you will find some amazing desks, chairs or credenzas if you look. Don't just stay at one place, check them all, I bet that you will find something that you will love.

Some of the old desks are large in size and very heavy, made of solid wood pieces. With some elbow grease and a good wood stain, your treasure hunt will yield a beautiful desk that you will be proud to own for years.

Truly, some of my most favorite desks are one that came from that store on Central Ave. I was sorry to see it close after 50 years in business the family closed their doors. I think they went on a well deserved vacation!

Look around in used office store and consignment places for all kinds furniture and other things to set up your home office. You will glad that you did.

Most of all, make your home office into a place that you will love to work in - after all, it is your office.

We Started Here and We End Here

At the beginning of this Hub, we started with this picture of an English style writing table with a lid that closes. It is a beautifully crafted desk that you would be proud to have in your office or in your entry way once you have that big house you have always wanted.

Strange, that big house could be on the corner of the area where you grew up or a high rise in the city. For me it is in the mountains, away from the hussel and bussel of the big cities. I have had that - now all I need is a large desk in a room filled with windows facing the mountains. With my high speed internet connection and laptop, I am a happy camper.

You see, your home office is really your castle - so pick your desk well and write another day. . .

Writing desks come from many different places and are at many different prices. Amazon is an amazing place to shop on line - if you have not try it yet - do so - Enjoy!

(Remember generated commission from one of my lenses go to helping animals!)
