400 and Climbing: Celebrating 400 Articles on Hub Pages

Updated on August 14, 2019

John has been writing poetry since his school days. He was awarded "Poet of the Year 2014" Hubby Awards and has had two poems become songs.

Another Unexpected Milestone

This article marks another milestone for me here at HubPages. I have to admit that when I first started here I never expected to be still writing here after a year, let alone nine. Also, after only writing three articles in my first year I would not have believed I could ever attain 400 published works.

So, welcome to article/hub 400 from Jodah. I thank you for reading, and if you are a friend, colleague, or follower, thank you for your support and encouragement over all these years. It would be impossible for me to list everyone here who has inspired and encouraged me to keep writing, so I won't. I'd hate to miss someone, and, anyway, if you are reading this you are one of them.

Within those 400 articles, I have written a little bit of everything and have articles on seven different niche sites, so hopefully some of what I have written has appealed to the different demographics. That said, the majority of my published works here have been poetry. I know that isn't everyone's cup of tea so, over time, I have tried to add extra information to those articles to make them more appealing to the non-poetry inclined as well.

Because poetry will always be my first love in regard to writing it is only to be expected that I will include some poetry here in my 400th article. Windmills and Mother Nature's Palm were written some time ago but this is the first I have shared them here at HubPages. Grecian Urn is a short poem written specifically for Instagram but I am sharing it here as well.

Windmills

My life’s at Nature’s mercy

So I pray that she is kind.

Each year is spinning ’round and ’round

Like the windmills of my mind.

My blades are old and rusted,

But I hope the breeze blows strong

So they keep turning day by day

Like a catchy top 10 song.

My pump is working overtime

To ensure the waters flow,

But better to be overworked

Then broken, bent and slow.

If the wind should chance to cease

And all the air is still,

My blades will all stop turning

For I am at Gaia’s will.

Grecian Urn

Pompeii cowered in lava’s wake

A clay urn cracked and broke

Vesuvius compassion-less

Just molten rock and smoke.

Statues made of flesh and blood

Where living beings wept

None had time to flee or run

The volcano no more slept.

Source

Mother Nature's Palm

On waking in my soft warm bed,

Wind howls outside these walls.

I watch the treetops bend and sway,

The sound of Nature calls.

Feeling lazy like a sloth

I push the bedspread back.

I yawn and put my feet to floor,

Then rub my aching back.

Shuffling to the kitchen,

I put the kettle on,

Then wander out onto the porch,

To butcher birds in song.

I sit back on my outdoor chair,

And look towards the trees,

A cat rubs up against my leg,

Where would I rather be?

Onward and Upward

So, with 400 hubs/articles down and dusted what is my next goal? Ten years at HubPages will be next, but that will come without any effort on my part. As long as HubPages keeps on keeping on, I will be here.

The next goal I have control over will be 500 articles. How long that will take me to achieve remains to be seen but I know a few fellow hubbers who have published over 1000 articles in less time than I have been here... billybuc, Eric Dierker, Kenneth Avery, and DreamOn to name a few. We all work at different rates and lead different lives so whatever milestones we can personally reach is significant.

Anyway, I wish you all success in whatever writing goals you are aiming for. From here it is just onward and upward, or as Buzz Lightyear would say "To infinity and beyond."

Chris, I greatly appreciate that comment. You too have been a constant here at HP and an inspiration to me. I think you were actually one of the first writers I actually followed because your flash fiction stories caught my attention. I don’t think I had heard of the genre before that. I really enjoyed our collaborations and hope we can do more in the future. I look forward to seeing you reach 400 published hubs in the near future. All the best my friend.

John, During my seven years writing on HubPages, your presence and your writings have been a constant source of enjoyment and encouragement. Thank you for being the writer that you are. You have shown your adaptability by branching out from poetry into short fiction. Our two experiments with co-writing short fiction were, in my estimation, successful. I hope to continue seeing you here for a very long time. Congratulations on reaching 400 articles. I'm right behind you at 356 published hubs.

I think writing also helps to keep the mind active and alert. I am honoured to be your writer friend as well. Have a great weekend.

Congratulations John, for that huge milestone of publishing 400 plus articles at HubPages. I have always enjoyed reading your quality work. Just keep writing and moving upwards and upwards.

This is the best part of writing, that you don’t have to retire. Rather, with age and maturity, the writing gets better and better. Because, with age comes experience.

I wish you all the best for the future. I feel privileged to be your writer friend.

      Thank You.

Thank you for such a wonderful comment, Shauna. Ones malt difficult to find time to write and be inspired when you are in full time employment. I am sure you will return to your love of writing in time.

Glad you like the photos from my trip. It was refreshing and inspiring, though I don’t know that I have been inspired to draw..maybe I should explore that. My attempts at painting leave a lot to be desired.

Thank you for your friendship and support as always.

Congrats on 400+ articles, John! I'm coming up on my 8th year at HP and am nowhere near your milestone. Having to have gone back to work in 2015 and the fact that my muse is either pissed that I did so or has taken a very long hiatus, has resulted in an intermittent (at best) contribution of my written word.

You're an inspiration. When I can finally retire, I hope to regain my creative momentum. In the interim, I follow my favorite writers (as best I can, given much of my time belongs to an employer) to stay active in this community I so love, I've gained awesome friendships that extend beyond dot com of HP.

You are one of them. And you continue to be my favorite poet.

By the way, I love the photos of your recent adventures. I'm sure stepping into the vast beauty this planet still has to offer helped in clearing the cobwebs and opening the door to even more creativity.

Tell me, did your recent tour inspire you to paint or draw?

Congratulations on 400 articles. I just had my 10 year Hubpage anniversary and I have something like 460 articles. I have deleted numerous articles because they became irrelevant as they were often about medicine.

Poetry never becomes irrelevant, and I truly enjoy your poems. Today is no exception, as I enjoyed your facts and the two poems.

Thank you Flourish. I have a few articles that I am quite proud of and it is hard to select one more than others. That said, my recipe hub "How to Make the World's Best Scrambled Eggs," merely because it was an experiment to see if I could combine poetry with a recipe hub and make it successful. The editors declined to move it to a niche site unless I removed the poem. I wouldn't do that so it has remained on HubPages but is my most popular/highest traffic hub even though it isn't on a niche site.

Paula, you have always been a great supporter of my work and a valued friend. Yes, I know how much you love the Aussie accent but I am technically challenged and not even sure how to record a poem and put it on here. Having said that I did get my son to recite and record a couple of my poems Including “City of Illusion.” He is an Aussie also so if you’d like to check out that hub at least you can listen to an someone with the accent.

I will ask him how to do it so maybe I can recite my poetry myself in future and record it. Thank you for the wonderful comment.

Since I have fallen in love with the fascinating Aussie "accent," the only thing that would put the icing on your work for me...would be to HEAR you on tape, reciting your work! I could listen to it intently until I may be lucky enough to actually sound like an Aussie!! I wonder if that's even possible for anyone who's not an authentic Australian, born, bred, raised & educated in your lovely country!?

Wishing you continued success! Peace, Paula

Val, thank you for being the first to read this and congratulate me. your kind words humble me, but I do appreciate every one of my friends and loyal readers here at HubPages.

It is true friends like you that make this a great place to write and to keep striving to produce better work. I am in awe of you being able to produce 445 pieces in four years, and I think you undervalue your poetic ability by the way.

I may make too much of a big deal about celebrating milestones..but I find it a good way to tick off achievements and then start moving on to the next goal.

Maybe I write poetry because I also am too lazy to write a 2000 word hub lol. Anyway, all jokes aside....thank you for the wonderful comment. It means a lot.

John, my friend -- Let me be the first to congratulate you on your success -- and a success it is, not necessarily by the number of pieces you have written, but by the number of friends, loyal readers, and views they have created.

In my 4 years I have done 445 pieces, but I can't compare to your success with readership. You know why? Because it's you, John, as a person, and the way you are artistically presenting the essence of your poetic soul -- which I could never achieve, because I am not a poet, just someone using poetry form to deliver some messages, maybe lazy to put them into a 2000 word hub.

So, I bow to you, my friend, along with so many others that will join this "celebrating party" to honor one fine human being, a friend, and a poet. Cheers, everyone, and let's all look forward to more of John's superb creations!!! -- Val
