Druthers: a Voting (Time Killing) Game

Updated on July 18, 2015

Druthers: the game

When I was on vacation in Brazil for a month, my friends and I played a weird sort of game called "Druthers." It may well have started out as "would you rather", but hey, we drank a lot of scotch while we were there, so words got shortened and slurred in the interest of efficiency. Anyway, the game goes something like this: you ask someone if they'd rather do one thing, or this other thing that is utterly unrelated to the original thing, or perhaps related in some unexpected way. The choices are what might be called a "Hobson's Choice" (Google it sometime), as neither choice is particularly appealing.

Warning: this game is outright addictive. It's infectious, too. Once you start playing Druthers, you may not be able to stop. Enjoy!

Bread and hatchets

This druther is of particular interest to me because of the significance of the invention of bread and the hatchet. Bread represents human beings' movement from hunter-gatherer to farming, thanks to the ability to store and cook grain (grain could survive in extreme temperatures, whereas other crops could not). A hatchet, or hand axe, is among the first tools used by prehistoric man, and is endemic of evolution itself, from scarcely more than a hairless ape to the masters of the universe we are today! Okay, "masters of the universe" is a little bit sarcastic, but hey, we couldn't have gotten to where we are today without bread and tools.

Thanks for stopping by!

I hope you've enjoyed this goofy little game. If you come up with any other original Druthers, post them in the comments and I may add them in here for others to enjoy!
