How do the featured hubs that show up when you go to Explore -> hubs and select topics work?
Do these hubs change? How come some hubs are shown but others are not?
Featured Hubs are the Hubs which pass all the quality guidelines of Hubpages. They use multi capsules and possess quality, useful content supported by good images and other engaging capsules such as poll and quizs to make it more interactive.
The trick is to choose the most appropriate category for your Hub instead of going for popular categories. Remember lesser the featured Hubs in a topic, greater the chances of your Hub featuring in the top thus gaining more exposure and readers.
Position of your feature Hub changes as per it's popularity i.e. number of comments (engagement) and shares on social media networks. Also you may notice that when you publish your Hub and it is approved and featured on the Hubpages, it may not appear in Topic section. The reason for the same is exposure and popularity of your Hub vis a vis other published and featured Hubs in the same category/topic.
I hope it helps :-)
Actually, someone asked this on the forum several days ago and a staff member said there's some secret algorithm called heatscore that rates how "hot" a hub is. It's not a score that we can see in our accounts, but some internal metric that only HP can see.
You'll notice that the hubs that appear are not necessarily very good, but they get a lot of comments and views.

If a hub is not featured does that mean that it doesn't get any search engine traffic from Google or other search engines?

Let me be honest with you, I joined Hubpages in the hope that I will be able to earn some extra income to supplement my college expenses. I know there is no such thing as easy money and I shouldn't expect to live off my earnings on hubpages. But, If I get a good number of my hubs featured, how much...

I'm thinking the answer is probably yes?If you have hubs that have been deemed "not featured", for one reason or another, will that factor into lowering your overall score/rating as a HubPages member? Example--let's say your overall rating is 75. If 10 non featured hubs become...

I'd like to suggest that "normal" Hubs should have an exclamation mark next to them on our account page.I think there's a very high risk that new Hubbers will misunderstand the normal/Featured system. I've already answered one enquiry from a Hubber who has misunderstood it.He...
