I was just checking out one of my recently moved articles on WeHaveKids, (checking the scrolling, load time, etc.) when this pop up replaced my tab (on mobile). NOT COOL. I’ve stopped visiting certain websites on my mobile because of this issue - why is it happening in an HP niche site?

It may seem innocuous but these types of pop ups take forever to edit and sometimes they crash my Safari. They’re extremely problematic and it’s upsetting that it’s happening here on HubPages.

I meant that they “take forever to EXIT”

It may have something to due with the niche site being copied.

The pop up makes us look untrustworthy and that upsets me. I invest a lot of time writing here and I want to see better safeguards for these types of possible traffic-deterrents.

In the past popups have been because of the viewer's computer having malware, or sometimes hijacked ads--To find these staff need a url and complete screen shot. They are not put there by Hubpages.

I just looked at a couple of your hubs on WHKs, Kierstin. Not seeing any pop-ups

    Thanks, Psycheskinner and theraggededge smile

I definitely don't think HP put them there, I'm just wondering if they've safeguarded against these kinds of pop ups because I've only experienced them on one other website which is (strangely) my local news source. But maybe it IS my browser. I only get them on mobile, not my computer.

It’s caused by a rogue add that somehow makes it through all the filters. We try and use top tier ad providers, but these do happen from time to time. When we can get the provider that served the ad, we submit it to them.

Paul, I’m glad to see that you now know it’s a rogue ad that’s cauisng the problem. When I reported this several months ago, Matt told me I must have had malware causing it. But I confirmed I didn’t.

It stopped happening shortly after that, but last week I noticed it’s back again. There is no way to catch the culprit because the rogue ad forces the popup to replace the present page in the same tab, without the ability to click back to the page I was just viewing.

By the way, did you know we also have ads now that suddenly fill the entire page?

In addition, there are animated ads from Maven that use a lot of overhead and cause the browser to reload the page with an error stating “using significant energy.”  I had sent a screenshot of that error to the team last week.

Thank you for responding, Paul! I'm glad it's something you guys are aware of and that it's not a common occurrence.

      Found this: https://mashable.com/2018/04/03/congrat … 3bJR6FXGqw

Looks like malware embedded in an app.

It’s not necessarily malware on our device. I have always wondered why I’m only having this happen to me when reading hubs. It never happens when I’m on other websites.

If you read farther down in that article you’ll see the paragraph stating...

Confiant identified one such network of so-called "malvertising" in January of this year, and found that it involved the creation of "28 fake ad agencies to distribute malvertising campaigns."

... that clearly states that the malware can be in the ads, not necessarily in other apps on our device.

I reported this to HubPages many months ago, and Matt knows about it.

Oh wow, theraggededge, thank you for this! I'm using Safari on my iOS so this explains why I'm so vulnerable to them.
