Recently, an editor went through one of my articles on a niche site and labouriously changed all the smart quotation marks and apostrophes (curly quotes) e.g. ” ’ to dumb quotes (straight quotes) e.g. " '. The style guide is silent on the issue, so what was the point of making the changes? Every typography site I’ve consulted says the same thing that dumb quotes are holdovers from the days of manual typewriters, are dated, and should not be used.

Seems the guilty one is the typewriter, because by using the straight quotes they won two extra keys. Personally I don't like the curly quotation marks and will never use them.
