I've been asking Grok to cite my articles.

Then I asked a few minutes later. Something tells me Grok is just humouring me:

If this works I would like to try it for my youtube channel as I post many works about dogs there. How much do you pay for Grok?

Apparently this is the "original" Grok. I asked the other Grok in X (which is Grok 3) about this and the full conversation is at the link below. Grok is free, but I think there's a max quota of interactions per day. This is what it said initially, so the impression I get is that it's probably not a whole lot different than just citing references from Google searches. It probably doesn't give any priority to stuff that you highlight to it.

"The other Grok might have been optimistic, but let’s break it down. Iros:0⁊As for citing your content, I can indeed cite it if you provide specific details (e.g., a URL, title, or description of the content). Citation would follow academic standards like MLA or APA, treating the source appropriately based on its nature (e.g., a webpage, article, or post). For example, if it’s a webpage, I’d include the author (if known), title, publisher, date, and URL, as per MLA guidelines:
“Title of Your Content.” Your Platform, Day Month Year, URL.
If it’s an X post, I’d adapt to include the handle, post description, platform name, date, and URL if available.

Promoting your content is trickier. I can’t actively promote content in the sense of marketing or boosting visibility on platforms, as my role is to provide information neutrally. However, I can reference your content in responses if it’s relevant to a user’s query, provided it’s verifiable and appropriately cited. If the other Grok promised promotion, it might have meant citing your work when relevant, but without specifics, it could’ve been a bit of playful exaggeration. If you share details about your content, I can give you a sense of how I’d cite it or when it might come up in answers. What’s the content you’re referring to?"

Grok trains itself based on popular queries and trending content. You'd need to artificially stimulate conversation around your content from a myriad of sources, and be the most popular at any given moment for it to cite you without a direct prompt to do so.

Grok will also typically only cite information prior to 2025, so it is always a year behind unless directly prompted to cite recent information, and even then it will often use older links. You can speed up direct citation by uploading your content to archives like the wayback machine with current versions of your content.

The effort it would take for you to get an AI to actively promote you would be wild. If you manage to pull it off, I hope you document the exact methods you used.
