A Lesson Plan on Synonyms for Elementary School Students.
We all know that there are many things in the world with similarities, and words that your students learn in school are no exception. Synonyms are different words with the same or similar meaning. This little lesson plan should help you teach your students about this element of grammar quickly and with strong retention.
INTRODUCTION: Write six words on the board-thin, leap, cold, skinny, jump, frigid. Ask student volunteers to pick two words with similar meaning, and to underline them. This exercise is best done with different colored chalk for each student volunteer. When the exercises are done, go over them with the class to see if the answers are correct. Afterwards, write the word SYNONYMS on the board along with its meaning-different words with the same meaning.
PROCEDURE: Write a list of words on the board. Engage the students that they must think of the synonyms to the words on the blackboard.
Have student volunteers write the synonyms underneath one of the words you've written on the board. It would help to have the student volunteers write the synonyms with a different colored chalk from the one you are writing with.
Go over these answers with the class, asking the students if they agree with the answers on the board.
SUMMARY: Students are to complete a worksheet, asking students to find the synonyms to different words. When the students are finished, go over the work with the students. Afterwards, students put the worksheets in their folders.
FOLLOW-UP: Students are broken up into groups. Give each group a deck of cards with words written on them. Each group must match as many synonyms as possible, and as quickly as possible. The group that finishes the task first wins.
