Beautiful Life…? Ha-ha-ha…!
Beautiful Life…? Ha-ha-ha…!
I happen to be a fan of the song “Valderi Valdera” or the “Happy Wanderer” which has the following lyrics;
“The Happy Wanderer
I love to go a-wandering,
Along the mountain track,
And as I go, I love to sing,
My knapsack on my back.
Chorus:
Val-deri,Val-dera,
Val-deri,
Val-dera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Val-deri,Val-dera.
My knapsack on my back.
I love to wander by the stream
That dances in the sun,
So joyously it calls to me,
"Come! Join my happy song!"
I wave my hat to all I meet,
And they wave back to me,
And blackbirds call so loud and sweet
From ev'ry green wood tree.
High overhead, the skylarks wing,
They never rest at home
But just like me, they love to sing,
As o'er the world we roam.
Oh, may I go a-wandering
Until the day I die!
Oh, may I always laugh and sing,
Beneath God's clear blue sky!”
I was 14 years old, a sophomore student in Pilgrim Institute when I first learned this song; Mrs. Romero was our Music teacher who effectively taught us this song. Her prowess in playing the piano along with our (my classmates and I) singing in chorus of this song made it more significant to me.
Yes, a significant song which, as I look back into my life, I can see how I myself is a “happy wanderer” in this life.
Beautiful Life!
If we define “beautiful life” according to the “happy wanderer’s” point of view then perhaps life is beautiful.
If we will try to scrutinize what this happy wanderer is then we can see he is homeless, carries a “knapsack on his back”, he is singing Valderi, Valdera all the way in his wandering, he is happy when people he met wave to acknowledge him, he is amaze with the stream, the birds, the trees, the clear blue sky, etc. Aren’t all these beautiful?
Despite the knapsack, (symbolic of burdens, problems and other heavy loads that we carry along in life) can we still sing and laugh along life’s journey? If so, then life is beautiful for us otherwise life is a grudge; no wonder I often hear people say “life sucks”, “reality sucks” and the likes.
But the question remains: how do you define beautiful life?
What would make life beautiful for you in the personal level?
The secret is in the heart and mind: No matter what stage, what station you choose to be to do and to have in life, the beauty is in your attitude towards life in general and your personal choices on what to see recognize and identify with your natural interests, inclinations and potentials.
I can endlessly appreciate my High School Music Teacher Mrs. Romero. This song really had inspired me to create a life where I can be singing happily all the way despite the “knapsack on my back.”
Yes, Life is beautiful; create it for you!
