Have you ever thought about becoming a college or high school tutor? Well the thought may have crossed your mind, at one time or another. And if you have considered tutoring as a part-time profession, to supplement your current income. Than online tutoring may be a career that's right for you. The beauty about certifiying to become an online tutor; is that you get to work from the comfort of your own home. And I'm sure that any individual given the opportunity wouldn't mind sitting in front of a computer, tutoring a few high school or college students.

Online tutoring positions have become very popular in today's society. However like most teaching positions, to qualify as an online tutor, you will need an advanced degree. A Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, is what is usually required to work in any teaching capacity. There may be a few positions out there, that may or may not require that you have a master's. But the ones that do, are far and in between. It doesn't necessarily have to be a teaching degree that you need to have, qualify as a tutor. But a program to show that you have completed the requirements for a Master's program. So before you decide to apply for a position as an online tutor, make sure that you have the necessary credentials before hand.

If you already have advanced certification and are considering a part-time position as a tutor, than you're initially one step ahead of the game. You may be wondering will any college, University, or High school hire me as a tutor? That is a good question and the answer is yes and no. Usually you will be employed through an online tutoring organization. An organization which mills out tutoring jobs to qualified tutors, to mentor students who are taking couses through their respected colleges, or universities. So in essence you are employed by a tutoring organization that hires you. And will be tutoring students who are enrolled in a major university for example. So it really works both ways. I did some research about organisations and/or institutions that hire prospective tutors, through their individualized application process. One such organization that I found to be very popular among universities and colleges is Smartthinking.

Smartthinking is based in Washington D.C. and was founded in 1999. It is also part of the well-reknowed, Pearson educational group. Some of in the audience reading the article at this time, may have either heard of; or seen the name Pearson, on one or more college or high school text books. They also have study manuals available for preparing individuals, for civil service exams for example. As an online tutor employed by Smartthinking one of your job responsibilities, may be to critique or provide feedback to a student, on a resume, cover letter or an english report.

Smartthinking hires tutor's for all types of online tutoring assignments. You are more than just an online tutor, when employed by Smartthinking. You are part of an organization of highly versed and expert instructor's within their chosen career fields. You will be working with other individual mentors and instructor's who come from a diverse group of retired high school teacher's, professors and other educators. And the Smartthinking organization will hire you to work for them; strictly on a part-time basis, so just try to remember this when filling out the online application. Just in case if you were wondering if Smartthinking does hire full-time tutor's as well. Because the answer to this unfortunately, is no. This organization as briefly mentioned only hires part-time tutors.

Hours for working as an online tutor-range from nine to thirty hours a week and as a Smartthinking tutor, and added bonus is that you will be also able to teach from the comfort of your own home. And your hours will also be flexible, because you can mentor students, on a 24/7 basis. This is an added benefit, especially if you're trying to juggle a full time career in between. So the convenience of setting up a schedule as an online tutor, to coincide with another job, is a rather easy process in this respect. If you are thinking about applying as an online tutor for Smartthinking you will first have to go through their online application process. And if you are accepted to the program as a tutor, in addition you will have to complete Smartthinking's online training program. This certification program involves a combination of cognitive exercises, along with interactive online sessions prepared by other veteran instructor's and tutors.

After completing this online program, online tutors to be, must demonstrate their competence in content specific areas. Such as through communication and instruction. In addition the Higher education department, will continually evaluate all tutor's in professional develpment exercises. And from time to time you will be evaluated through performance appraisals. After successful training and certification you will have access to Smartthinking's virtual online teaching platform. This online teaching platform, accessible from your laptop, or other pc, is a virtual white blackboard. You will be teaching and tutoring your assigned students, right from this computer blackboard. And your training, just in case you were wondering is paid for completely. So in case you were wondering, you will not be wasting valuable time, sitting there for nothing.

If you eventually decide to become an online tutor and are accepted by an educational institution like Smartthinking. You in turn, will also have the option of tutoring individual students within a variety of disciplines. Even though Smartthinking does offer mostly reading and writing tutorial services via its online platform. This organization also hires online writing tutors, in disciplines such as, pharmacology and tutors who are also versed within disciplines in philosophy and chemistry curriculums.

Whatever your area of teaching expertise is, there is a position open that curtails to fit your background. Online tutoring is just another avenue to consider when it comes down to making yourself not only marketable, but employable as well. So if you want to explore the world of online tutoring further; absent from all of the hassles of driving on a crowded freeway to teach class in person.
