Updated on June 8, 2011

There are thousands of space fighting games out there, but what if you actually want to explore space, and explore the solar system!

Nothing beats being able to explore the solar system on your iPhone!

Introduction to iPhone space exploration.

There are plenty of iPhone apps out there which will help you learn about the solar system around you. Some of them teach you facts about the universe, while others immerse you in a space exploration game. If you are looking for a purely educational iPhone app you can find some great fact filled utilities which will give you a lot of detail on each object in our solar system. For those who get bored by pages of text though, a space exploration game can teach you as you play.

Learn About Space

If you want to learn about space then the iPhone is the perfect medium for an interactive learning experience. There are plenty of apps out there which can help you find out more about the universe, no matter where you are in the world.

Apps geared more towards learning tend to be a little more text heavy than space exploration games, but they also contain a whole lot more information. Using one of these applications is a great way to learn more about the universe, from facts and figures to how it all works!

Space Exploration Games

iPhone space exploration games go a little bit easier on the information, and instead attempt to make the learning process a little bit more fun. By adventuring through the solar system in games such as Traveller-AR you can quickly find yourself learning about just how vast space is.

Space exploration games modeled on the universe provide you with the opportunity to fly through the universe, with futuristic enhancements keeping the players attention.

While a space exploration game probably won't teach you enough to become an astrophysicist, is is definitely a great way to capture a child's attention to the vast wonders of space.

Which Should I Choose?

Choosing the right type of game for the right type of personality is important.  Someone who finds learning difficult will probably find themselves getting a lot more information from a space exploration game.  However somebody who cherishes facts and knowledge will only gain that knowledge from an application which explores the universe in depth.

I've seen these apps on the app store, but they're all paid and I'm kind of a cheapo... hahaha! This has enticed me, though. Thanks for the hub.
