Get To Know Your Learning Style and Learning Strategy

In this hub, I'm going to show you the V.A.R.K (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic) learning styles. VARK is originally developed by Neil Fleming.

Visual Learner

Preferences:

  • Information displayed in diagrams such as maps, spider diagrams, charts, flow charts, graphs, labelled diagrams as well as other devices that may represent the information
  • This does not includes still images picture, videos or PowerPoint
  • Meaningful symbols that represent the different relationship between different things might also be helpful for this type of learner

Strategies:

  • Make use of graphic organizers
  • Redraw the information based on your memory
  • Replace words into symbols or initials
  • Highlight important key points using different colors

Aural Learner

Preferences:

  • Information that is heard or spoken
  • Learn more efficiently from lectures, group discussion, speaking as well as talking things through
  • This also includes talking out loud or talking to oneself which means repeating information to yourself

Strategies:

  • Record your voice reading your written summarized notes and listen to them
  • Make a discussion to build or expand your understanding
  • Reread your notes out loud
  • Explain or read out your notes to fellow aural learners

Read/Write Learner

Preferences:

  • Information displayed in words
  • Learn best using PowerPoint presentations, the Internet, Google and Wikipedia

Strategies:

  • Keep writing your own notes
  • Rephrase main ideas and principles to make you understand better
  • Replace graphic information in the form of statements/words

Kinesthetic Learner

Preferences:

  • The use of experience and practice
  • This includes demonstrations, simulations, videos or movie of an actual 'real' things
  • Concrete nature of the example is key
  • Basically, they learn best from experience of doing something

Strategies:

  • Make use of real life experiences such as applications and case studies in your summary to help with abstract concepts
  • Redo your lab experiments or projects
  • Make use of picture that can illustrate your ideas

Each and every one of us has different learning style as well as different learning strategies. It is best to identify which match your learning style because it will make it easier to apply the strategies that work best for your preferences. Over the course of our life, our learning style will change from time to time and by reading this, you might be able to apply some of these strategy which might be useful to you in the future.
