How To Count In German

Updated on December 3, 2012

Counting is one of the first things taught when learning any foreign language and it shows the importance of understanding numbers. I studied the German language for 6 years from the time I was 18 until 24. Unfortunately after that I was not in a position to utilize the language and I have forgotten some of it, but the grammar was so ingrained in me I still know it better than English. In fact it was by learning German grammar that I learned English grammar.

German is the official language of, you guessed it, Germany and is the most widely used language throughout Europe. The German language is the predominant first language in Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. Approximately 120 million people are considered native speakers of German and approximately another 80 million are considered non-native German speakers. As you can see, the German language is taught in many schools throughout the world including schools, universities and Goethe Institutes.

Knowing how to count in German is incredibly useful for those planning a trip to Germany or any European country where you will be involved in transactions using currency.

Counting in German will be completed below going from 0 through 100 and then in multiples of 100 while assisting with pronunciations given in the parenthesis.
