How to Make Your Child Love Reading Books

Books develop imagination

Here is the opinion of many psychologists: children need to read more, because books develop their imagination. In cartoons, films and computer games the images of the characters are already created by an artist. The child does not need to imagine, compose or invent. As a result, children who have been brought up with the help of this kind of easy information cannot develop any visual thinking. A book is another pair of shoes. As children read, this makes their imagination work. Beyond every word the image is created by their own mind. However, to get the taste of reading one needs to have a habit to do so. It is the parents' task to develop this skill. Here are a few methods suggested by pedagogues.

Method of moderate reading

Show interest to the plot of the book that your little one is actually reading. Ask your child to read at least one paragraph before going to sleep. In the morning, ask about the events that took place in that paragraph. This is so intriguing, isn’t it?

Why does it work?

  • A child is happy to do something for an adult who shares the same interests.
  • The last events of the day are fixed in emotional memory which means that evening readings will become a habit. It is important not to exhaust your child, though.

Method of Lev Kassil

Start reading an interesting book to your child and when you arrive to a cliffhanger, stop reading. Say that you have an urgency and leave. If the child is interested, he or she will continue reading. Prevent anyone from the family from helping him or her.

Why does it work?

  • Intrigued by the plot, the child does not realize involvement in reading, and when the awareness comes, evidence is this becomes an easy task.
  • By doing the same thing as the adult, the child feels like an adult.

Role-playing

Role-play the situations from the familiar books: "Look, what a huge puddle! Looks like tears of Alice..." From time to time, quote a book that has been read and ask the child to continue the quote: “Humpty- Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty-Dumpty had a …” If the child reacts quickly, praise him or her: "Good job! You are so well-informed!"

Why does it work?

  • A game is a good situation for any kind of teaching.
  • A child understands that to have erudition is a good thing and tries to read more.

Method of "Writing a Book"

Suggest your child an idea to write a book. Buy a notebook; help to decide what the new story is about. Tell that every story must have a miraculous adventure and a happy end. And drawings, of course!

Why does it work?

  • The new occupation will absorb the child, and the book will become a close friend.
  • As the kid becomes an author, he or she will show interest to the authorship of the writers, plots of their stories and will begin to read more.
