Updated on May 18, 2010

I heard bad news from my local newspaper two days ago. About five people death by hit the lightning. When they were working in the farm, suddenly the lightning hit them directly without any warning before. Actually they were working when it's raining. For information, this month is rainy season. So many bad incident haunted us who life in Indonesia. Like, floods, landslides, and unexpected threats during the rainy season is lightning.

I remember with the "Twister" movie, there were a group of people doing research to warn when the storm comes. And I think this is a great job and need some courage, I think only brave people can do that. I heard "storm chaser" is a job which pump your adrenaline. When you dedicate your self to make a better for human life and back to the nature come from. This all from God and God create as a part of human life. Description of the lightning

Electricity is kind of energy. Many electricity created by nature, contain a lot of power. One sample of the power of nature is Lightning or thunderstorm. Lightning caused by the displacement of negative charge towards the positive charge. According to the science knowledge, Lightning is a giant spark which jumps between the two masses with different electric field. Lightning are the result of electrical discharge in the cloud. The energy of the disposals were so great that raises a series of light, heat, and strong sound. It can destroy buildings, fire even kill people. How fast is the Lightning? it have speed around 150 000 km / sec. It also will create a booming sound. The minimum electric field in lightning about one million volts per meter. Lightning usually occurs at an altitude of about 10 km and caused a five to ten glint in one minute, but most are not visible because it occurs in the cloud.

The characteristics of lightning

The sky suddenly became dark with the wind comes so fast. The clouds like a cauliflower which has gray color, then the air was stale. These clouds are usually called as a lightning cloud (Comulunimbus). We can found many types of deadly lightning, like:

  • St. Elmo’s Fire. Has existed for centuries, beginning with the ancient Greeks, Julius Caesar, Columbus and Magellan. It cause fear as a blue flame spirits.
  • Boom. Thunder Ball is a strange phenomenon, with a review report to the ancient Greek. This lightning caused the greatest threat to our life and property.
  • Deadly. In the United States, an average of 58 people killed each year by lightning. It also happen in my country.
  • Cloud Flashes. When lightning flashes on the clouds, sometimes you can see the line in the air around the storm.
  • Re-strike. This lightning contain 3-4 individuals stroke, but may have more.
  • Mind-blowing Beauty. Lightning through the air produce white light. But can appear as different colors depending on weather conditions.
  • Scary Powerful Strikes to Towers, Buildings. Buildings, towers, and other high points are often struck by lightning, because the electricity found a way to reach the ground.
  • Double Lightning. Lightning is the power of nature. Beautiful and dangerous. Blue-white flash of lightning due to extreme heat.
  • Mulitple Strikes. This lightning looks like a ribbon. This occurs in a wind storm with high traffic.
  • Rocket Lightning. it usually horizontal at cloud base. The movement of this lightning like a rocket. This is one of the rarest types of lightning.
  • Volcanic Triggered Lightning. Lightning can be triggered by the large volcanic eruptions. which release gases and material into the atmosphere.
  • Sensational Volcanic-Lightning. Fire, lightning, ice, and the ashes are united here, triggering volcanic lightning sounded like a rifle shot.

How to anticipate when lightning comes

Generally, the lightning hit the victims in an open flat area. We can't imagine if the lightning hit the human body. The victims will suddenly bounce when a lightning struck the body. Like other victims, people were killed instantly by the body on fire. When lightning strikes the house, the house will be broken. And electronic equipment also broken such as telephone, television, etc. How to anticipate when the lightning come:

  • High building should installed by the lightning rod. If there is lightning grabbing this tool then distributed through large wire made by copper or brass directly into the soil.
  • When the lightning comes, we'd better avoid the open area.
  • Find a place to shelter if you hear or see lightning. Do not wait until it rains before act. Sometimes lightning strikes before rain falls.
  • Do not take shelter under tall trees or in the vehicle (such as cars or buses), lightning is often snatched up the highest things in the ground.
  • When you are in the open field, please squat (don't sit) and covered your ears by your hands. If it rains, try to made your clothes wet. because wet clothes will help you reduce the serious injury if struck by lightning.
  • When it was raining and we saw the lightning, simple suggestion from me is remove the antenna channels on television, and unplug the phone cord. To avoid damage to electrical equipment, better turn off all the electronic equipment.
  • Do not touch metal objects, electrical equipment, or cable. If you're forced to use a laptop, disconnect the power and switch on the battery.
  • Do not use the home phone unless absolutely necessary.
  • Stay away from balconies, terraces, windows and doors because lightning can grab the open area. Don't use the sink for a while (to wash dishes), because water in the pipe as a good electrically conductive.

I hope this information useful for us. Please enjoy all the pictures of lightning below. although it looks beautiful but the danger of lightning still haunted us. Better be careful when we see the lightning.
