Need of sex education in schools

Updated on March 13, 2013

Start sex education which provides knowledge on using protection while perfoming sex to prevent AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases

Yes, sex eduction needs to be implemented in Indian schools quickly, as the amount of rapes happening in India is quite unbelievable. It is the worst thing to happen. Implementing sex education in Indian schools would make life more safe in India, especially nowadays teen sex is increasing and due to lack of information and shyness, teenagers are getting infected with AIDS and young girls are getting pregnant, when they just intent to have sex for passion and enjoyment and not for getting pregnant.

One of my friend asked me a couple of days back that if government will implement sex education in schools, would there be a situation like Kamasutra but I told him no, as I think sex education has more to do than Kamasutra. I am pretty sure if sex education is implemented in India, they are not going to teach Kamasutra. Sex education is about taking precautionary measures and making children aware of what it is all about and it is not about encouraging children to have sex. On the other hand, Kamasutra totally provides instructions on how to do sex in different positions and styles for pleasure of your partner.

Sex education is quite important, especially in India. Having the knowledge can stop AIDS and in some way make the society more open and rapes can be avoided to an extent.

AIDS and HIV are rampant in India. Unless and until young people know about sex and self-protection from a responsible teacher, they will listen to crap half-baked knowledge spread from peer-to-peer and get themselves in trouble. It is not like no school offers sex education. There are schools which have started offering sex education in India. In some schools, it is a part of the Health subject in CBSE and other boards of education in India. Lack of sex education can have severe consequences. I remember some days back it was in the news and media, a girl committed suicide because she believed that kissing would make her pregnant, so what this is? Now if that girl would have known that after kissing she cannot become pregnant, she would have been alive. Parents are becoming broad-minded but when it comes to educating their kids on sex, they are against it, why? I know that there is proper timing and age factor involved in this subject but that is also not being implemented in our home environment. So, the better decision is in the hands of government, to implement sex education in India or not.

I remember when I was in class 8th or 9th, there were two chapters, Reproduction System Part I and II, but when these chapters were taught to us, teachers would skip or say it in short and would teach us only about female and male anatomy and as a result, some of my friends became curious and started to watch porn movies to understand it.

So at last, I would say that sex education would help in reducing teenage pregnancies, AIDS, and various other sexually-transmitted diseases which happen due to ignorance and lack of knowledge and it should be implemented in the curriculum.

Is there really a need of sex education in schools?

Sex education should be provided after adolescence

If you compare India with the western nations, sex or sex education becomes a common thing at an earlier age than in India. There is major influence of the western nations here in India, especially in big cities. I do believe sex education and its awareness is must but only at the right time and age as discussed in my previous hubs.

One thing more to add is that providing sex education before adolescence is not good. That is why I speak of puberty, as that is the age when sexual desires are actually experienced. That is when the mind raises questions and we seek answers to certain feelings and experiences which are nature's own. If you give sex education to children at an age when they really do not understand it or cannot feel it, it leads to premature knowledge, which can lead them to wrong ideas and perceptions.

@WK Hayes, yes bro this is high time government needs to start thinking about bringing back sex education. It is very important.

@mojefballa, thanks dear for your visit and comment.

@france1982, India is also having many cases of unmarried pregnant women due to not using protection and some acquiring HIV and STD due to illiteracy about safe sexual practices but still India is far behind America.

I have just read the stats related to film "Lets Talk About Sex": "Every day in America, 10,000 teenagers catch an STD, 2,400 young girls become pregnant, and 55 young people are infected with HIV."... How is it going on in India?

Bill envall once joked about talking with his son regarding sex. As he sat there trying to find a way to talk with his son, he figured the best thing to dow as to ask his son what his son knew about the subject...a half hour later Bill found himself taking notes LOL.

The point being, kids know alot about sex but without proper guidance, no matter what the country, there is bound to be a huge amount of problems. I, for one, feel that sex education should be tuahgt globally.

At one point in time, Sex Education was taught in America but cut were made years ago, thanks to lack of funding. To me, sex education is far more important than many of the classes they have. I hope that someone here will wake up and relaize the vital importance of of this subject and bring back sex education. Great article. Thank you for speaking out.

Thanks a lot Colin Smith for your long comment on "is there any need of immediate implementation of sex education in schools?"

The whole premises and base on which teaching children sexual matters might be construed as being good in the widening of awareness of these matters, however there is a better way forward, rather than the single mindedness of sex. The first and foremost point is that as citizens we loose our freedom of choice, hence we become subject to the state if sex education is compulsory. Our children become subject to the state without the input of parental influence, love or control. I believe this point has not truly been taken on board. Hitler, Stalin, Polpot and many other dictators enslaved their peoples through the insidious stealth of laws, eventually seeing the death and torture of millions of peoples in their various countries. How does the saying go, “Tip of the ice berg, the thin edge of the wedge”? Good intentions can often result in tears and misplaced ideals.

The statement of “are more likely to use contraception when they do become sexually active”, might indeed come to pass but is this really a good thing, or is there a better result? Where might I express myself in these critical matters, whom should I lobby?

The family is the backbone of any nation, training youth to be responsible through the condom, does seem a little drastic and that our youth are unable to be taught correct principals and govern themselves. There is a far better way forward in the promotion of sexual habits than the single blunt habit of using condoms. Teaching body parts, inappropriate ways of touching, etc is mechanical, the natural way of mankind, what of emotional damage, love, responsibility, even not having sex before marriage, what about marriage being taught itself, I see no mention of these type of uplifting and edifying thoughts and practises?

Teaching sex as a subject with out moral obligation, the association of love, marriage and procreation is the lesser way to educate and build a nation. Sexual activity is a wonderful physical activity, besides being enjoyable, part of the longitevity of mankind, hence pro creation, for without children we would be extinct, however is not and never was meant to be a singular activity. Of cause sex outside of marriage takes place, just like people who murder and hurt, which is not correct, I do not believe teaching this way to go through life, just pop on a condom and all will be OK. And I do not believe you or the majority of the nation do. Not to mention of the mental reports especially on women who have been promiscuous in early life, and the effects as they move into maturity and latter years. No mention of homosexual predators on boys and the effect it has on them in latter years and the ability to develop into caring husbands and fathers.

As for the age of 16 being legally adults, one would wish our teenagers were adults, certainly our five children were wonderful teenagers but never adults until much latter in life; as for me I did not mature well until about 24 years of age. 16 year olds cannot fight in the military, cannot vote, and cannot make mature decisions. Although the law might say they are adults, remember some laws are made a miss, no one is perfect, perhaps a time to change that law, and it will not be the first time a wrong law has been passed.

As you can see I am a little frustrated, probably more so because previous letters to the government and politician have been answered in a poor way or by some policy statement. My personal feelings is that sex outside of marriage in any shape or form is not good for any one, that this aught to be taught to our children. What if the teacher is homosexually bias, has sex outside of marriage, and is anti marriage, how will they teach these sensitive subjects?

How do I and my friends have any influence with the governing body of the land to stop this foolishness, to halt the enslavement of parents by taking the God given right from them to teach their children? Of cause some people will not teach their children “right and wrong” as it were, this does not give the government the right to teach what is wrong. Perhaps the time and energy should be aimed at the parents; of cause this is difficult, costly and time consuming, where as children are easy “targets” and easy to manipulate. (Not mentally mature) Is it not interesting that the greater sex problems occur when the nation is most promiscuous, why do you think that is? Has any one taken the steps to run a full survey into the spread of promiscuity? One only needs to look at the TV, internet, films, books, magazines and other communication channels, and really see how our children have been taught, plus their parents in many instances. Why not go for the root of the problem rather than the fruit of the tree? Interesting how some politicians wring their hands with the increased drunkenness and cost to the nation, who extended the drinking hours, did the country ask for this, no, was the drink bill fully thought through or placed upon the nation by poorly advised or qualified leaders? So it will be with this education bill, the nation will reap the whirl wind of greater sexual problems in the future with liberisation of sex habits and compulsory sex education.

Corrupt the children, corrupt the family, corrupt the nation, some one has got their plans well laid out in respect of sex education but not for the future welfare of the nation.

I strongly feel it is wrong to FORCE children into classrooms for compulsory sexual education, against the righteous desires of their parents or themselves; what next let’s inject all our children, without parental redress, for all manner of sexual problems and other things, let’s kill all deformed children, better still let us kill all the unemployed and gypsies, worked in Germany, extreme of cause but it did happen to an educated and great nation. Let’s do away with parent’s rights then we will be free to do what we want with children. This of cause sound incredible, to me having my right taken from me is also increadable. Well Hitler had his youth well organised, had his legal brothels, had his gas chambers had his way, yet the Germans are a good and upright nation. Are we a good and upright nation, I would hope so, hence should not be herded like sheep while the leaders of the land make executive decisions in opposition to the general public.

40 years ago if pornography and today’s non existent sex standards had been introduced into the media or land; there would have been an uproar and all would have been thrown out. What has taken place is the insidious “drip by drip, here a little there a little” until the nation is drenched with sexual corruption, drug problems and drink disorders. So it is with parental rights, a slow dripping away of freedom, until we are led into a state of captivity. The 1,000 years of freedom wiped away in a matter of years. The saddest indictment for our wonderful country is that no one in authority seems to care; the cry of one lone voice is trodden underfoot with derision.

Once again please point me in the direction where I might have a personal input into this topic, including an interview with Mr Balls, who I understand is spearheading this movement.

      Yours sincerely,

      Colin Smith.

You raise the right point " Sex education is about taking precautionary measures" peoples thinks that this will motivate the children to do sex. Infact I won the same point in my extempore speech competiton in my school and I won second prize at zonal level..... Thank you for choosing this topic.
