Articles A and an are used according to the sound of a word. If the world's sound from the beginning is Vowel sound then article an is used. Some words begin with vowel E, U, O but their sound is consonant then article A is used. For example as under this picture of elephant has shown
An elephant is in the jungle.
Here E vowel is used in the word elephant and also gives vowel sound . So article An is used before the word elephant
Here is only one elephant.
Here both sentences are for elephant and both are for one elephant. One pronounces from the beginning consonant sound not vowel sound so an is not used.
Here is some examples that begin with vowels and give consonant sound so article A is used.
I have a European friend.
There is a university in our City.
He gave me a One-rupee note.
Sameer is an honest shopkeeper.
Rama is an honorary member.
She has been waiting here for an hour.
Here in these sentences the words honest, honorary and hour h is silent and vowel sound is pronounced. Therefore an is used with these words.
Seema is an M.A . But his brother is a B. A.
Geeta is an S. D. O. but his father was J. C. O.
In these sentences The words begin with M and S pronounce with vowel sound a. So an is used. B and J are not pronounced with vowel sound. Therefore article A is pronounced.
A is used before counting words like, dozen, hundred, score, thousand, lakh, million, lot of, great many and great deal.
