Medical Marijuana Usage

Updated on November 12, 2008

Marijuana has been used for religious, spiritual and medical reasons for more than 4.000 years. In ancient times Shamans heavily used marijuana for reaching a trance state and reach their own gods. Shamans were both religious and medical authority for tribes so it isn't wrong to say that marijuana was also used as medicine in those tribes. The Egyptians used hemp to relieve pain for patients. It has been widely used for medical reasons until United States banned the usage of marijuana.

Against the common belief marijuana isn't a toxic drug which means that marijuana has no threat of death. There hasn't been a single death report caused by marijuana. When compared with 10.000 deaths caused from FDA approved medicines marijuana is a lot safer drug for medical purposes. The latest studies has also shown that marijuana has no notable cancer effects so we can say it's safer than tobacco (which United States will never ban while they gain so much profit from it). Marijuana isn't a physically addictive drug unlike alcohol and tobacco which is highly addictive. You may ask the question "Why the hell it was banned?". The only logical explanation to this is noble United States didn't want a herb every one can easily cultivate in their garden which will cut from their addictive and unhealthy cigarettes and alcohol profit.

Marijuana is used as medicine for several diseases. It is used in cancer and AIDS cases for getting rid of nausea and for increasing appetite. Marijuana is known for its increasing interest on eating so cancer patients who lose significant weight as a result of chemotherapy are using marijuana for gaining weight. I came by an episode at Desperate Housewives where a mother is preparing space cakes for her cancer patient daughter. Also AIDS patients who suffer from consistent weight loss are telling that they are benefiting from marijuana. Marijuana is also used by glaucoma patients who suffer from blindness caused by high intraocular pressure. Marijuana is reported to lower the intraocular pressure which my prevent glaucoma patients from blindness.

Although reported benefits of medical usage of marijuana medical marijuana usage is still prohibited in most countries and most states of United States. The federal authorities at United States are pushing for more control over medical usage of marijuana and trying to prevent usage in every state. According to CBS news a 41 year old woman, mother of two, living in Oakland and using marijuana with doctor prescription is taken to U.S. Supreme Court and the court ruled against medical marijuana usage. Federal authorities are trying to suppress federal laws over state laws and such court decisions are encouraging them.

Actually I'm really impressed how U.S.A. can forbid something proven to be useful while promoting deadly tobacco and alcohol. Does anyone needs to speak of honesty while the alcohol and tobacco cartels profits are in question?

When and why was weed made illegal. I thought it was always illegal. I must say that I'm learning a lot from my 26 yeaar old daughter who doesn't work and hasn't except for about 2 years in her entire life. She does love her pot, though. You may ask "where does she get her pot from if she's not working?" Well her pot-head father smokes and is very happy to 'turn her on' whenever he has some, which is every day. That's why she doesn't mind living with him. If she was not high all the time, who knows, maybe she'd work and take the burden of financially supporting her off those around her.It really is too bad,you know. Her IQ was 127 in the 8th grade. It's probably around 27 by now with that great big cloud that follows her,

They wont legalize pot. Theyll just ban tobacco. The government doesnt give a shit about our well being lol THEY MAKE TOO MUCH MONEY OFF IT BEING ILLEGAL! Thats what its all about: Money. I mean think about how it got banned in the first place.

People have been getting high for years; nontheless, it would take a bunch of ignoramuses to outlaw such a wonderful drug. Maybe if they smoke a little chibba, they would understand how it makes the ailing really feel.

I am 42 years old. I have had six back surgeries, that have left me in chronic pain. The powers that be allow the doctors to prescribe all this man made shit, hydros, oxys etc.. etc..this has got this country by the balls. I simply refuse to take it for the pain. I am like many other people that know someone or should I say know many people who the doctors who are "PRACTICING MEDICINE" on and have" HOOKED" with their legal medicine. I will just continue to hit one a few times and take each day as it comes. It is alot more effective and I still have control over my own mind.

i got busted for growing weed in mich. ok, get home from work at 9pm and open the door to 10 cops going through my s*** and guns aimed at my head! wow thanks for taking time to bust me when the guy below me died of a crack overdose. when the police are victomizing the wrong people who do you turn to, when the supreme court decides that the holy trinity seen by weed smokers to be fake, and when the fellow man will sell out a nuclear physist to greater there social advancement it is time for change. it is going to be on the ballot in mich. this nov. and this is the second time, previously before it was legalized in cali... it is going to pass, and not a bit to soon. this will help this country get out of the depressoin it is in. it is probally the only drug that i would ask people to take at church... i seem to remember the very last profit on the EARTH say, "you grow your own, you smoke your own!" that profits name was Bob Marley. We know why the priests religions would not believe this, but people all around the WORLD people believe it and know who he is. He died for us, and for his beliefs, he was the profit. and when i am standing tall before GOD, it will be Him, who takes our hands, not your political restaining orders aka OLD religion. Take a moment to reflect on what a real live living profit would do right now to better this world... would it be to free the people. your darn tootin right. the new saying should be What Would Flanders Do. because Jesus is the Lords Son, and we are the last children of our world. We have to decide, not somebody who knows how to move there lips and make some noise. We are the last chance that this world has. Peace

Great hub and great info, I don't smoke the stuff myself, I eat it (hemp that is!), but I do support the legalization of it. Heck, if you can use morphene and heroine from the opium poppy and freely prescribe it, why not pot as well. It's certainly less dangerous, in fact, 32,000 people die every year in the U.S from prescription drug use. Marijuana-0

Great hub, Marijuana defines everything the USA is about. If you look at the substance how it is controlled, How much money the USA Government is making on it.

You will see that the American society is totally illusionary crap. We aren't even cultivating hemp for fiber or the 300 other products it can create. OIL which makes Gas can be made.

I am not a fatalist, economic expert or visionary, but how long will it go on in this country?

I know lets jail every dumb ass that smokes it and when the prisons fill up with non violent offenders lets build more prisons. Oh and lets let the child molesters such as priests run free! Oh wait thats what we are doing.

It os inhumane, cruel and stupid to restrict recreational drugs or medical marijuana. To legalize alcohol & nicotine, which are both fatal and addictive plus contribute to other fatal diseases caused by the use of these 2 drugs, and to outlaw marijuana use whether it be for medical or recreational purposes is insanity. Our government forces us to chose from addictive and fatal drugs if we want to alter our state of mind, this is not only stupid it is cruel and evil. The Bush Administration is evil! Vote for Ron Paul~:)

This just confirms that everything created by God has its own specific purpose. When people do not use it for its intended purpose, abuse takes charge. Sad to note that the traditional use of marijuana revolves around abuse.
