My Dragonfly and I

Dragonfly Down

The subtle commotion

Caught my attention

Flailing so helplessly

Sputtering, flapping

Spinning itself

To a watery grave

Got up from my chair

To see what was happ’ning

Determined, deliberate

The knight of the day

“He's God's creature, an omen"

That's how I viewed him

Dragonfly Drying

 I scooped him skyward

Cupped in my palm

To drink in the sun

To dry out his wings

Diaphanous netting

All drop-clogged and sodden

Too heavy to lift him

A burden profound

He stayed on my finger

Accepting my solace

My breathy caresses

To hasten the healing

By God's Grace

We communed there like comrades

Comfortable, gentle

He seemed to intuit

He’d placed his trust well

There now, little one

You’ll be just fine

Got in over your head?

I know how that feels!

Take what you need,

Regain your composure

And when feel buoyant

Fly home safe and free.

Dragonfly Symbology

The significance of my dragonfly's visit today was not lost on me. I have always liked dragonflies (along with butterflies, ladybugs and sometimes bees). So I decided to check into some dragonfly lure.

Where's what I found from a site called crylstalinks.

"The dragonfly inhabits two realms: air and water. The influence of both these elements will be felt by Dragonfly people. They will be emotional and passionate during their early years (the influence of water) and more balanced with greater mental clarity and control in as they mature (the influence of air).

Dragonfly is the essence of the winds of change, the messages of wisdom and enlightenment and hope; and the communication from the elemental world. Dragonfles can guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation, bringing the light and color of transformation into your life."

Dragonflies in Mythology (much here, but here was my favorite).

Dragonflies and damselflies, were connected to Freya the Norse goddess of love, fertility and warfare. Freya was famous for her beauty and her knowledge as a magician. It was she who taught Odin the shamanic practices known as seidr.

The paired bodies of mating dragonflies form the shape of a heart, perhaps being the source for that modern symbol of love. In ancient lore, the dragonfly represents transformation, adaptation and insight.

Would you have rescued this dragonfly?

Thank you for the beautiful comment, aceatnna. I was lucky to find really cool pics. Guess I'm hardly the only dragonfly lover in the world!

      Thank you, Deborah!

That was a special day for me, but not my first encounter with a dragonfly in peril.

I think they are the coolest!

Just happened upon your beautiful ode. I have been drawn to the seeming frail beauty of dragonfly's and found your poem fitting their luminescence. Thanks.

I used to catch dragonflies in dizzying colors in the field, I always associate them with summertime. This one is a beauty, thanks for sharing.

Btw, I'm glad that you've been pushing your pen to write poetry more. :D

Hey Tony! You are so right. You ARE my bud. And it's wonderful to have a bud who is so supportive yet does not see things politically eye-to-eye with me. I learn a lot from you and your "rants." Who knew HP would teach me so much about tolerance and respect:-)?

CR -- I like your ending!! Luckily I did not realize dragonflies can bite or sting or I might not have caressed him so much, thus tempting him to retaliate.

What a lovely piece! I did think it was going to end more like this though:

Your all dry now. It's time to get, see?

Then that dragonfly bastard bit me.

BP -- Mud wrestling, the group shower at Christoph's, all manner of misadventures on The Captain's ship. Ah, there's lots of wild times in our pasts. Let's put some in our futures, shall we?

Hi Maggs. You are obviously a nature lover after my own heart. I'd have a hard time letting any bug drown, even a wasp. Just hope the little bugger didn't sting me in the process!

I loved your poem, in this weather I spend quite a bit of time in the pool and often there are insects that are trying their best to stay afloat and I must admit if I see any signs of life even in wasps I can't leave them to drown like you I have to rescue them.

Russ -- Makes total sense to me. These exquisite creatures invite communion. I believe they do speak to us in their own way. Glad to have a dragonfly buddy on HP!

Shamel -- Epical incident! I like that! Thanks

Ralwus -- Thanks. Well, this particular little jet setter added at least a few more hours to his life! What he did after he flew off my finger is up to him:-).

What a delightful reflection! I once spent three hours over a pond 'talking' to a dragon fly and waiting for the words to come to capture the experience (didn't happen). Yours did happen for me - so well written. Thank you.

Oh Shalini, I love the visual of your dogs chasing dragonfly shadows!

I did have quite the spiritual connection with the little dude. Haven't spent a lot of time (read: ANY) caressing bugs in my life. This poor fellow seemed like he needed a nurse.

Good to see you. Sorry it's time for me to head to bed now. Maybe catch you manana. Hugs, MM

They're so fragile and beautiful - and your love was the wind 'neath its wings :) Loved the poem and the bit from crystallinks.

Our dogs chase their shadows - this is the season many of them are seen around - and I'm always on the lookout to see they don't look up and lunge for them!

Why thank you, dear Alekhouse! I enjoyed writing it and adorning it with dragonfly pictures. There are soooo many out there.

Raven King -- I have no doubt the dragonfly you saw was the one I sent out on the breeze. They are savvy insects and know who the cool humans are!

Hi Mighty Mom. No wonder dragonflies are so fascinating.

That's for rescuing it. I think your dragonfly visited my humble garden since I spotted it on a bamboo support for my malabar spinach.
