So what's the fuss with legalizing Marijuana?

Updated on May 2, 2009

He had heard so much from his friend about how relaxed the Dutch are with Marijuana, weed, Indian hemp or whatever you choose to call it, but its one thing to hear and another to totally experience it. Finally he took that long overdue holiday from the United States and visited his friend in the Netherlands. To his bewilderment he found out they even sell it in shops (Café, Coffe shop) like candy. You could just walk in and buy as much as you can handle. There are so many types to choose from, there are shops that sell special cakes and candies made with marijuana. Even as he smokes, he sees others walking and smoking on the street as if they are eating candies. Well if this is a dream he hopes he never wakes up from it.

Not one that has bothered to do any research on this type of freedom (smoking marijuana publicly) before. He took his time to ask others about this thing he had heard countless times from his friend. They confirmed that smoking marijuana is actually legal in the Netherlands; he wonders why his own country the United States wouldn’t legalize it. His friend jokes that the united States choose to legalize guns while they choose marijuana. Still teasing him, he says if they legalize it along with the guns, there might be too much crime there. Then he noticed the relaxed atmosphere of the Netherlands, the people are down to earth, friendly and just takes life easy. The most important thing he found out is how low the crime rate is in the country.

A police man walks by, on instincts he hid the wrap of marijuana he was about to smoke. His friend laughs and just to show him how safe it was to smoke, he walks up to the policeman, brought out his own wrap and asked the policeman for a lighter. The policeman apologized and told him he didn’t have one, and then he politely pointed him to a store across the road that he could buy a lighter. This was simply out of this world; there are no words to describe his feelings towards this type of freedom. He would pick this any day to gun, what does he need a gun for anyway, marijuana would just be fine thanks. As he sat on the front of a coffe shop with his friend smoking, he watches to see if only a certain type of people smoke it. Minutes later a luxurious car pulled up, an executive type stepped out and walked into the Coffe shop. A bicycle parked and its rider also walked in, as he watched he saw nice looking ladies, professionals, and ordinary people walks in to buy marijuana. While some stayed inside the shop to smoke it, others left with theirs. So much tourist too, especially from England and the neighboring country Germany, they just love the country’s freedom like himself. He went back inside to buy another wrap; this time he stayed inside to shoot pool with his friend. He definitely loves this country and wonders aloud “What’s the fuss with legalizing Marijuana?

Turnover of the legal "coffee shop" trade is estimated to be at least £1.6 billion every year
