Teaching As a Profession

Updated on February 18, 2016

Why It Is Essential to Choose a Profession Earlier?

Human life on earth is very short. In this short span of life man should have definite aim to attain success in life. In other words, our life is nothing but a journey. To reach the destination of the journey, every man has some plans and schedule which may be called aim in life. An aim is the corner stone to success in human life. A life without any aim is like a ship without a rudder. An aim helps a man to gain his coveted objective. So, in order to become successful in life, a certain aim should be fixed earlier. It is because if you have a clear idea about what you want to be in your life, you can take necessary steps accordingly. Then you can make a foolproof plan of the steps that are required for getting to that specific goal. As a result, achieving the goal becomes easier. That’s why choosing a profession prior starting the preparations is very much important in order to give it a successful completion.

Right Choice of Profession:

Some want to earn money, some want to earn fame and some want to serve people. I think, right choice of a profession leads to success, happiness and peace but a wrong choice result in failure, frustration and unhappiness. It should be decided according to one's aptitude, ability and merit. For example, if you are good at mathematics and science related subjects, then you can go with any of the engineering subjects. If you are good at drawing, then mechanical engineering can be a good profession for you as it consist a lot of drawing. If you have good drawing skills as well as clothing sense, then you can go with fashion designing. There are other numerous examples that can be given.

Teaching As a Profession:

Undoubtedly teaching is a very noble profession. It may not be financially very rewarding, but it gives one mental satisfaction. A teacher is like a potter who works on wheel to give shape to his pots, cutting out the rough edges to give a perfect finish to the end product. In former times teachers were highly respected. They had profound dedication and sincerity. The students were also respectful and obedient. But at present neither the students nor the teachers have the same sincerity and singleness of purpose. As a result, the standard of education has deteriorated. However, there are still exceptional teachers who are genuinely concerned about the future of their pupils and try to guide them sincerely. By taking teaching as a profession, you can get the golden opportunity of building up many good students and eventually play a major in building up a good nation. It is because the more number of good students the better the nation.

Qualities of a Good Teacher:

A good teacher must have certain qualities.

Smartness: He/She must be intelligent, learned compassionate and just. He/She should be smart enough to deal with his/her students. There will be many kinds of students in a class and it takes real smartness to handle all these students alone.

Approach: He/She must possess a positive approach to life and handle the academic, socioeconomic and professional problems of the pupils with warmth and affection. Being affectionate is necessary for dealing with the students. Only then he/she will be able to handle all kinds of problems from his/her point of view.

Skill: A good teacher must be skilled to guide and counsel them in times of difficulty. There are times when a student can through difficult times. Failure of coming out from this difficult time can be very frustrating and can lead to the destruction of his/her career. At that time he/she, as a teacher he/she can play a very handy role and help that particular one to come out of his frustration and help him/her to make himself/herself successful.

I have always admired teachers who are cheerful and who adopt a friendly but firm approach in the class. Students always feel comfortable in the company of such teachers and always look forward to listening to them. The interest of students in a particular subject largely depends on the teacher's approach and skill in it. Here good communication skill along with ability to relate to children is very helpful in holding the easily distracted minds of children.

Enjoyment among Children:

Unfortunately, there are people who take teaching out of compulsion, because the other avenues are not open to them. They drift into teaching because they have failed to achieve their ambition. He/She has by choice decided to opt for teaching and love working with children. There is so much one can actually learn from them. Children are spontaneous, innocent and warm. They respond to love and affection unlike adults whose thinking clouds their reactions. It must be a very satisfying experience to shape young minds, eager to learn, who come to a teacher in total faith.

So if you want to make a good contribution in society, then try to be a good teacher and help the students to progress.
