Ten More Strangest Folklore Creatures
With many different tribes or groups of people throughout the world many stories have been created, even more beings meant as a explanation for things gone a miss. Here is a list of another ten strangest folklore creatures.
#10, Futakuchi-Onna. Starting off the list is a folklore from Japan, this one is known as the two mouthed woman. There are several versions of the tale but the most common one is said to be that the Futakuchi-Onna never ate so a second mouth was made to fix that. The Futakuchi-Onna is also said to be the making of a curse, the story goes that the Futakuchi-Onna starved her step child to death and the child used its spirit to curse the step mother. The second mouth hides behind the young woman's hair and in some instances the hair acts as hands to bring forth food. A cool fact is that the Pokemon Mawile is based of the Futakuchi-Onna.
#9, The Kraken. The Kraken was said to be a large and monstrous creature which was first said to look more like a crab then octopus or squid, which would make it a less terrifying thing honestly. The Kraken is known to easily tear down ships using its large tentacles, many stories tell of long tentacles coming out of the water and dragging many sailors down to their doom. However it has also been said that the Kraken was based off first sightings of the Giant Squid. Which either way knowing something big like that lies under the water still doesn't sit well with me.
#8, Kappa. The Kappa is another being from Japanese culture, this ones name translates to River Child. These water dwelling beings are known to drag disobedient children and unwary travelers to their deaths. Often devouring their victims. They are usually depicted as having a turtle like head and body, a beak and frog like limbs. Usually the size of a child and with a sort of dent on the top of their head. This dent holds water which is said to be the source of the Kappa's powers. A good defense for these is to bow, the Kappa will bow in return and if done so repeatedly will cause the Kappa to drain the water from its head rendering them weak. Also they love cucumbers for some reason, many carry them as a bargaining tool of sorts.
#7, The Menhune of Hawaii. In Hawaii there is a story that states that there was once a group of small folk who created many buildings and structures in Hawaii, similar to the Hobbits from Lord of The Rings. It is said that each Menehune was master at a craft and that each had their own job to do, they also were said to excel at their task. They set out to create something in the morning and if it was not completed by night then it was abandoned. In any case it seemed the Menehune were also similar to Dwarves, who were well known for their craftsmanship.
#6, The Jersey Devil. In New Jersey there is a story of a child, Mother Leeds supposedly had twelve children and once finding out that she was yet again pregnant she cursed the child. It was on a stormy night that she gave birth to the child, although born looking human it turned into a monstrous creature. The Jersey Devil has been known to be very fast and attack with a blood curdling scream, in a few of the stories it is said to kill children. The Home of this evil beastie is said to be in Pine Barrens.
#5, Troll. Here we have a creature well known in Scandinavian mythology, these monsters tend to only really come out at night and like to eat whatever they can. Known to eat cattle and other animals but they are not to shy to try and eat some unwary travelers. Trolls come in all sizes from large to small, a good thing however is that they cannot stand sunlight and will turn to stone if touched by it.
#4, Pontianak. This strange creature apparently has a city named after it, it also eats dicks. Literally. This creature is from Indonesia, it is a shape shifter as they mostly do and come towards folks as a rather gorgeous woman. Said to be a pregnant woman who died and who is also not in a good mood. While she does enjoy a bit of groin munching she is also known to rip whomever she has trapped apart. And gobble their eyes. A way to stop this is to jam a nail into the Pontianak's head, which will supposedly keep her in the human form and will make her a good wife. Weird.
#3, Cockatrice. This being is known to be quite similar to the Basilisk, since one of the Basilisk description show it as being part rooster I can see why. The Cockatrice is dangerous with being able to turn anyone to stone with a single glance. Being the mix between a rooster and a dragon is the usual description of the creature, a weasel is said to be immune to the stare and the Cockatrice will die immediately if hearing a rooster call or if by seeing its own reflection. So always carry your rooster with you kids. The more you know.
#2, Padfoot. This one comes from England, and here I thought all they had was tea and crumpits. The Padfoot is said to take the form of a large black dog, also sometimes a mean looking sheep or donkey. Known to be a death omen whoever sees this creature either does immediately or soon after, while the creature has several forms and can even turn invisible you will be able to hear it from the sounds of the chains it carries with it. People have a love of death I swear.
#1, Baba-Yaga. In many folklore and legends witches and hags are known to be dangerous, Baba-Yaga is no different. Said to fly on a motar and pestle or ever by using a house with no doors or windows but with chicken legs on the bottom of the house to transport herself. She is known to be very evil and while wise many say it is unwise to seek her out, nothing better then a dangerous old woman I always say. Not really.
