The Benefit Of Storytelling

Updated on January 25, 2010

Storytelling culture has evolved since a long time ago. The early development of storytelling was limited in the royal environment. For further development, tales delivered by parents to children. The material of storytelling was limited like legend, myth or fable. Tales are not bound by place or time. However, many tales which contains a moral message and describing the truth. In this modern era, the activities of storytelling in the eyes of the children are not popular anymore. From wake up until bedtime, they are facing by a variety of television shows and modern games like Play Station.

Actually storytelling activities can attract and bring many benefits. not only for children but also for parents. This activity can strengthen the communication between parents and children.

There no precise age limit on when a child should know the story. For kids in preschool, storytelling help them to know more about vocabulary. Choose the simple story and the kids know about that in daily life. Like a Fable. But for the kids in elementary school we can choose for them the story consists manners, values, moral messages and problem solving. Whith all expectation values and the message can be applied to children in everyday life. Reading stories or fairy tales to children is one way to communicate with children. From this story we can send the moral message. It contain kindness of life. Those message can be a religion or a general message that we can told to them. There are some benefits of storytelling for children.

Media to convey values and ethics

Story or tale is an effective medium to Convey values and ethics to children. Even to grow a sense of Empathy. The values such as honesty, Humility, solidarity, hard work, and about the various daily habits such as the importance of eating vegetables and Brushing teeth (like the tooth fairy story).

Introduced form of emotion

Every story the characters must have. We need to know the contents of the previous stories. So we can give emphasis to the dialogue or expression. When the story entering the conflict, we can describe the character-based with emotions. Knowing several emotions can help children know the character of human-based the story. It can helps them to empathize with others or friends.

Expand vocabulary

Like they study in the school, more often they read, they will know more . we can use the storytelling time to introduce unfamiliar vocabulary or newest vocabulary. I am sure their vocabulary will increased than before.

Strengthen the inner bond

Storytelling is the best trick in providing quality time for fathers and working mothers. With high activity you would not have time to play with your children. Use this opportunity wisely, because this is wonderful moment for children and parent. And I believe children also wait the storytelling moment.

Stimulate imagination

Once in a while you try to storytelling without a guide book and let the child continue the story based on their own imagination. They will more often ask. We may also ask the children about that story, so they grow accustomed to Imagining. More often they are Imagining they will more creative. To get used early to tell the story, the child gradually became in love with books. after that they will get used to writing many ideas and imagination

There are some things you can do and don't do when reading stories

You can do......

  • Began to read stories to children as often as possible. The earlier we read it easier and better for children.
  • For toddlers. you need to anything that contains repetition. Read books as often as possible
  • Set a time at least once a day for one story.
  • Start storytelling using picture book which has a few sentences.

You don't do.....

  • Don't read the story that you don't like
  • Don't read the book if you don't have a time.
  • Don't use the book for threat. Like "if you do not clean your bedroom, there is no story for this night". This make the positive sight sight become negative.
  • Consider the level of intellectual, social, and emotional.

Storytelling is so important for so many reasons as you have stated in this hub. It is as important today as it has always been...perhaps even more so, (cutting out all the distractions which are less important and perhaps even harmful) for helping to form a child's character. Well done! Voted up and useful.

My friend, jeyaramd. I am so happy to see you here and share your opinion about this topic. I also appreciate your hubs about storytelling. You have strong feelings about storytelling based your personal experience with your grandfather. He must be a great man who share a value of life by a story. Of course, I agree with you about having milk and cookies while heard the storytelling. Thanks for your compliment about me. You are very talented as well. Take care!

A great hub about story telling. We connect so well. I like the way you discussed story telling in a different light. There are so many benefits. We can dedicate an entire blog about just story telling. Many childhoods are bought up through story telling. Story telling doesn't always have to be a long process. Two minutes with a child is still story telling. When you are in the car or when you are grocery shopping. We should make use of these valuable times to tell story. We don't always have to have the perfect setting for story telling. But, I have to admit. Having milk and cookies while your parent reads you a story for you to sleep; is unforgettable. Thats the best. But, we should not miss out in all the opportunities. You showed some great examples of storytelling and the meanings for imagination, creating bonds and so on. I really appreciate your perspective. You must be a wonderful teachers. Teachers that know the value of imagination are really great inspirers in my book. You are one such hubber. Thank you. Actually, my parents were teachers so I know teaching is in our blood. I cannot help share stories with people. Thank you for sharing yours and directing me to your hub. Wonderful work.

I have always loved story time, and now I'm a bit of a story time teller in my family at times. It's not only great for kids, the adults learn so much more about there children and what interests them at each point of growth. Such an amazing thing to witness, if your lucky enough too. Thanks, what a great HUB. Voted you up here.

That's the great side of storytelling. There is a social life inside this activity. As a teacher storytelling is alternative media in teaching. Good to send the moral message for student. Sometimes they don't want to the point, they like description before the main lesson. Thanks vox vocis.

I use storytelling as a teaching method so I definitely agree with you. Storytelling is important for children because they learn and have fun at the same time no matter whether the teller is a teacher or parent.

My friend this is true! It is sad that the modern world leave us lacking time to do this enjoyable practice, that not only makes us connect better with children, but let us connect intimately with our own inner child!

      Great theme, great hub!

      Thumbs up!!!

For HealthyHanna, I am glad the book authors like you visit my hub. I agree with you. This is modern era. Most of people want somethings instant in their life. Like you said that they prefer video and audio books. But in storytelling we get the warm relationship between parents and children, that's the important point. We don't get love through technology.

Thanks hypnodude, martycraigs and HealthyHanna for supporting this hub.

I know sometimes it become dilemma, Between parents and children. Busy parents in working sometimes they don't have time meet their lovely children. They go home at night, and they saw their children had slept. But we can make it better, go home early just for telling the story and the first say hello to children before going to sleep.

Not long ago I wrote a children's book: Chatter Batter, which I included a section at the back for parents because I don't think we understand how important reading and storytelling is to the brain development of children. I got many many nods in agreement, but I couldn't see much implimentation. People want videos. Audio books. Anything but interaction with their children. How sad. There is no better way to bond than to read to your child. Child development studies tell the story. Too bad we are so busy. It seems to be those with less education, whose children need it the most, that are the hardest to reach.

This is a fun post, with a good introduction to the history of storytelling. This is why storytelling and library classes are so important during preschool and elementary years, for many of the reasons you mention here.

      Great post, thanks for sharing.

Isn't it funny how much a story can mean to us? We are always telling stories to each other...we do it every day when we relate what happens in our lives to those around us. Thank you for your hub!

I really enjoyed read your hub. The storytelling for the native americans is the only way their secret life is pasted down from generation to generation. They are still using this tecnique and every day the storyteller has to tell the story to the chief, as to make sure it is the same all the time. Thanks for a great article.

I have been doing this with my child. I start a story and then I let him add a part then I add a part and we really make up a silly story. Thing was he was not interested at first in me reading to him, but now he is asking me more and more and Im so proud he has the love of books that I do now. Excellent hub!

Storytelling is an excellent teaching strategy because stories ignite student interest, help students create vivid mental images and stories activate the thinking process.

I read books and since my hubby doesn't read except the internet and sports, catches most of his stuff off CNN, I tell him my stories - everything I've read, whether he likes it or not! ha ha It is a relaxing thing though I've found - if he is driving or we are just sitting together quietly or lying in bed, sometimes I just tell him one of the books I've read and he seems to enjoy it - figure he is 'reading' by osmosis! Good points in your hub.

Even if the story is available on CD, my kids love to be read to by a living, breathing person. The best part about reading stories to kids are the questions they ask and observations they make about a story. I am always amazed at the insight of very young kids. The time spent reading a story is precious. Thank for a great Hub and advice.
