The Origin of the Term Moro

Updated on August 27, 2010

The Term Moro

The Origin of the Term Moro

The term Moro was not derogatory and pejorative when first used by the Spaniards. It was derived from the first four letters of country of origin of the conquerors of Spain – Morocco – “Moro” (singular or Moros - plural form), or “Moor” (singular and Moors – plural) in English. The first mention of the term Moro in Spanish records refers to a trader that became the interpreter of Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon. This Moro must have traveled a lot for he even warned the Cebuanos that the Spaniards are mighty warriors. He must be an Arab trader for never was he mentioned as a native practicing Islam, since the Philippines was then a transit point for Arab merchants on their way to China. Spanish records also show that the Spaniards did not call the natives practicing Islam as Muslim Filipinos but followers of Muhammad or Mahomet. This indicates that the term Moro carried a racial connotation as well for it was also used to refer to Arab looking people.

Later, the term Moro was used to refer to the people of Mindanao that practiced Islam. This shows that the term is associated with religion for Spaniards used the terms Moros and Muslim Filipinos interchageably.

While it is reflective of the religious affiliation of the people of Mindanao it was also a racial term i.e., Arab, therefore we can also say that there was a possible involvement of foreigners in the Moro Resistance. This is reinforced by the use of the term Sultanate that is Arabic in origin and further proven by the basic qualification of a Sultan to be a descendant of Prophet Muhammad (MPBUH), meaning he is of foreign origin or even a foreigner himself. This is aside from the concept of “Dar ul Islam,” or House of Islam that makes it a duty of any Muslim to help any Muslim in need. It must be noted that history as written before is the story of the lives of the great and the famous not of the inarticulate and the masses, therefore, when the term Moro was used by the Spaniards they were perhaps narrating the story of the foreign elements of the struggle of the Mindanaoans not just their ethnic resistance, just as when the term Filipino was first used it was referred to the mestizos and the Philippine born Spaniards not really the natives of the country as it is used at present.

I believe on the power of such words. And sometimes, we cannot deny the fact that we used the word not according to its meaning. At first, i do not really know the exact meaning of the word 'moro' but as time goes and as i'm stepping higher on my history subject i have learned the term most especially adding this article on the origin of the moro. There are a lot of people who misunderstand this word and a lot of misconceptions on the concept of moro. The term moro indeed is quite a complicate term not unless you have research on its real meaning. And sad to say that those people who are not knowledgeable of this term perhaps insults the Muslim people. Hoping that this article could help in spreading the real meaning of the 'moro term'.

I agree with the observation that the term Moro was pejorative as used by the Greeks and the Romans as well as in many chronicles in the olden days. The chronicler of Magellan used the term Moro for the Arab trader in Cebu while for the Muslims in Mindanao the term Mahometano was used, in other words there was a distinction between foreign and local populace. I am also with the idea that “no amount of wisdom that could support the idea of adopting Moro as ... national identity” if it is pejorative, but whatever reason used to justify its used I really do not know. For me only History is the judged.

i can still clearly remember when i was still in high school, the term moro for me means "NPA", TERRORIST, and other bad definitions. maybe because of the stories i had heard from the Spaniards that MOROS are evil and bad. when i studied college in MSU there was a turning oint in my life that changed my perceptions from the Filipino Muslims. There the same as we are. They commit mistakes and do good turn as well. They are not different as other people says. we adapted the term moro from the Spaniards which is for me wrong because as century goes on, the definition of MORO as the Spaniards had defined will surely be carried until the end of the world. They must be called the right way ASAP. like for example in Manila, once i had been there and for the first time last October 2011 to attend a National Summit, i have heard lots of bad and definitely wrong thoughts against the Filipino Muslims. we still have the time. Let's start it now!

People who writes has a responsibility to readers in relating the truth. Misleading the people with wrong information is a great disservice to humanity. Islam has vehemently forbidden Muslims from lying. Distorting history is a great lie. With regards to Moros, it was never derived from the first four letters of Morocco. Moro is a word from the ancient Latin language which means BLACK. As to the history of its application to the BLACK inhabitants of North Africa, first by the Greek as Maurus and later of Latin by the Romans as Moro way back in the 1st Century BC, a bulk of written literature and published articles, ancient chronicles, etc. are avalable in many libraries in the wide wide World. One can surf the net and googlefind this pejorative and derogatory word. Anyone can open a Latin or Spanish dictionary to find that Moro means BLACK. Calling people by their color BLACK, RED, YELLOW, BROWN, WHITE, etc. is a racial slur. This word Moro has many connotations, like uncivilized, pirates, killers, and the like as imputed by the Spaniards beginning midway in the Middle Ages. This word Moro has many homonyms, like Moro, meaning a tumor in the shape of a mulberry, moros meaning an abnormal or a stupid person, moron meaning a person whose stupidity is below and idiot and an embecile, morose, morosity, morosop, etc. We are repeatedly explaining this to remind our fellow Muslims that there is no amount of wisdom that coud support the idea of adopting Moro as our national identity. One undeniable evidence of the pejorativeness of this Latin word is the fact that we Muslims fall in a fit of extreme rage or anger when somebady call us Moros or its puns Moklo, Morotay, Morokontay, etc. Why adopt a name as your identity when yo get very angry as other people quote the meaning in the dictionaries?

The term Moro was derived from the first four letters of country of origin of the conquerors of Spain which is Morocco and later, it was used to the people of Mindanao practicing the teachings of Islam.

This was the reason why Muslims in Mindanao of today is being called as Moro. It is because of the historical meaning of the word. I got it, thank you...

whenever I hear the word Moro, what comes to my mind is a dirty or balahura person. Somebody who doesn't clean his house. Someone who urinates or defecate in the toilet bowl but is too lazy to flush the toilet. I have lived in a dormitory together with some moro students and that's the attitude I noticed among these moro people.

In this one, i believe that etymology can affect the history. it's all because it is stated there that the term moro came from the term mours used by the spanish during their war with the muslim africans. and when they saw that the moros are muslims, then they also call us moros.. and thus, they also fought with us since it is fresh in their mind that muslims are their main enemy at that time. :)

According to the scriptures, Wisdom is the most important thing, therefore, get wisdom. What I mean is that, do not believe in all that your teachers, parents, elders and others are telling you, you have to research it yourself. Whoever is telling the story unless proven by documents have the tendency to be bias. Just like what happened in the past. In place of giving the right information, facts were distorted in order to serve their desired outcome. So it appeared that when the term Moro was associated with anything bad it was simply to prevent the people of Luzon and the Visayas not to follow the people of Mindanao. On the other hand, the term Indio or Kastila or kasila were also used negatively to mean everything bad and inferiority of the people in the Visayas and Luzon. Hence, the term bisaya is a lowly call. In short, whoever controls information has the edge over the other. In order for the people to be left uneducated a mechanism must be put in place like war, politics and religion. If you observed, in places where violence are a daily phenomenon, only few are getting education and when people have less education they could not think independently, in other words they are easy to control.

Well the article was really informative. It opens the minds of the people especially to those who had a very little understanding of the word Moro. As far as my hypothalamus could remember, i first heard the word " Moro" from one of my classmates back then in high school, and the word was used as if it means really really bad. Now i understand that the word is not really degrading if you'll base it from it's etymology. it was just a mere term applied for arab traders that are mostly muslims, but was used interchangeably by the Spaniards.

Now i know what MORO means.

And also the term moro refers to the Muslim people in the Philippines. They are the largest non-Christian group in the country . They are the ones who are not christianized or become as Catholic by the Spaniards. The term Moro is used by the spaniards to describe Muslim people. From the past several years until now, Moros have fled discrimination by the Christians or the Catholic people. There are sevearl different moro ethnic Groups in the Philippines and which is located in different parts of the country. The Moro settlement is called the Bangsamoro Region.

Yes it was told that the term Moro was derogatory in the 16th century. They remained separate from the mainstream Philippine society during the 19th and 20th centuries. It reminds me of the Moro Crater Massacre during the Battle of Bud Dajo where they attacked villages killing 2,000 unarmed Moros for the purpose of exterminating Filipino Muslims. Same is true for the massacre happened in a Mosque killing 65 men, women and children in North Cotabato done by the Christian militia called Ilaga where it is reported that some of them even cut off the ears of dead Muslims and wore them around their necks as trophies.

With my young age, I couldn't help but be disheartened. I know I am not knowledgeable nor is my opinion worth to be heard but I wish and pray for peace in the Philippines. Today, I can see progress with the Muslim community though it cannot be denied that there has been a large migration of the Moros to Malaysia and Indonesia for the usual discrimination, for example the media. When someone committed rape, the news flashes his name on the news, but if he is a Muslim then religion will always be glued to his name, "Isang Muslim nangrape." but we can never heard "Islang Kristiyano nanghostage" during the Mendoza conflict if I may use it only as an example. This is just a humble observation, and I guess it's something that makes me think there is bias. Nevertheless, I am happy to have non-Muslim classmates and friends that makes me believe in a future of peace. There are only 2 types of people in this world, the good and bad. There are no good Muslims, bad Muslims, good Christians, bad Christians, good Hindu, etc etc. Either you are a good person or a bad one. Religion is not a criterion.

So since have already read this hub finally now i am proud to be called moro. But we cannot deny that it is being part of our society that some people think that the term moro or muslim is part of the bad people here in mindanao but this not true because when we say muslim, it is a person who follow or practice the islam religion. So it means muslim is not bad people and i also agree with Baclay said that it is not suitable to used the term muslim when we referring to those rebels particularly here in mindanao.

i'm hoping that this wrong perception about moro or muslim will be erase to those someone who think that muslim is bad.

The wrong perception about the true meaning of the term Moros has been influenced a lot by the media. As far as i remember, last August there was a news concerning about this issue; prohibiting all the journalists to used the term Muslims or Moros in their headlines.

I even had an experience last February, when i attended the National Science Fair; when i introduced myself to my co-participants, saying i came from Mindanao, they're really shocked and very curious about Mindanao. In the middle of our conversation they asked me about the Muslims and war in Mindanao, they really thought that Muslims or Moros are all rebels and bad people. I told them that we live peace in Mindanao and that the term Muslims are not suitable to used when referring to those rebels.

See, how the media influenced the perception of the Filipinos about the Muslims and Moros. How i wish all Filipinos will be able to read this hub, to enlighten them, what the term Muslims or Moros really mean.

Thank you sir, for this hub and all the knowledge you imparted us. May you accomplish your mission! God bless u and your family. Merry Christmas!

The English word for Moro as what Sir Ganancial said is Moors. It has referred to several historic and modern populations of Berber, Black African and Arab descent from Northern Africa, some of whom came to conquer and occupy the Iberian Peninsula for nearly 800 years. At that time they were Muslim, although earlier the people had followed other religions. They called the territory Al Andalus, comprising most of what is now Spain and Portugal."Moors" are not a distinct or self-defined people. That is just based on my history teacher in high school.

Now, going back to the moro, i really never thought that it's a Spanish influenced word.

The Spaniards indeed gave the name of the term "Moro". Spaniards has a vast explanatory for this.

Filipino Muslims may react for this term because many of my Maranao friends don't want them to be called as "Moros". Why such? Maybe they are thinking that this term is an act of rebellion but they consider themselves as an Islamic area, an Islamic in faith.

Moros are brave people. We non-muslim should not degrade them because of what we hear from others, they(some) downgrade the moros because of the wrong and negative comments being hurled to them. we must not be judgemental enough. We bought live in Mindanao, we should treat each other as brothers and sisters or in short Kapamilya regardless with the religion if we want freedom. Lets not be one-sided try to have a look with both sides ,affirmative and negative, learn to balance every single thing. Be a critical thinker.

I am confused about the records of the Spanish which shows that Spaniards didn't call Natives practicing Islam as Muslim Filipinos but rather followers of Muhammad or the so called-Mohamet. As I've understand, when you're a follower of Muhammad you are bringing the religion of Islam. Then, what will be the religion of the Natives that time?

I think its an honor to be called a Moro if you are a Muslim since its like really belonging to your religion.

This is really helpful to us Muslims sir, not only us but to all of us. I think it was my 1st time to hear the word Moro. I'm not really sure.. It was really good to know about History :)

I don't want to be called Moro.

Moro people refers to a population of Muslims in the Philippines, forming the largest non-Christian group in the country, comprising about 5% to 10% of the total Philippine population. There are ten Moro ethnic groups, although other smaller tribes are also called "Moro", as the majority of their populations are also Muslims. The term came into use during the colonial period, when the Spaniards used the term Moros (Moors) to describe Muslim natives.

      MORO? NO.. :)

Before, I always think that MORO refers to the Muslim fighters. And so, I don't really blame others if they get angry when they are called by that term. They thought and so do I that it is somewhat referring to the wild, undisciplined and high-and-mighty fighters in the Southern Philippines. (I meant no offense with that.)

Now, I understand that it is mostly just of a misunderstanding. Thanks to this article. It helps to rectify those confusions and wrong thoughts I had before.
