The Ultimate College Target Checklist

Updated on June 19, 2012

As school lets out for the Summer, thousands of new college Freshman around the world will be taking on the gigantic task of planning for college in the Fall. While running to the nearest Wal-Mart, Target, or other shopping center will undoubtedly be one of the first experiences of move-in day, taking time to prepare for the day will certainly be rewarding. Preparing for a new life in college is unlike any vacation you have had to pack for to date. You have to carefully balance the number of things that you bring, remembering that you will need all of the things you have needed for the last 18 years, but also that you will be living in a space most likely a quarter of the size. Below, I have compiled a list of things that every college Freshman should consider. Obviously this list isn't completely personalized, and depending on your gender and if you have health issues, you will need to add and make changes to it. You may want to copy and paste this list into a document editor and print it from there.

Be sure to check out the ultimate college laptop buying guide as well!

*Remember to take cleaning wipes and a moving cart for move-in day

I think this is a great and very inclusive hub. I would have let the numbers our for how many pants, shirts, hangers etc. to bring however, because that number is going to be different for everyone - there is no way I could have survived a semester with only two notebooks!

Awesome Hub! Another great thing that I found that was essential was an iPad. I can take notes, record items, and so much more. The cool thing about it is that it is very quiet as well!

Thanks for your feedback, Michelle! An ironing board and cleaning supplies are great ideas, and I added them to the list. Many places make miniature ironing boards that would certainly fit in a dorm room.

Great list! Helpful! I found several items I hadn't thought of yet and added to the list for my college student. (Something you may want to add is an iron/ironing board and a small tote of cleaning supplies.)

Thanks for the comment Netspend. A prepaid visa is a great idea. For everyone reading, I would add that to your list

Great hub! As a college senior, I would also recommend getting a prepaid Visa card for emergencies. I kept it for gas, taxi, and food. I left it in my vehicle and it came in to save the day when I really needed it. Netspend is a popular company. Stores all over carry their Visa card. I monitored my account online when I wanted to reload it. I saw a friend get one and so I got one.
