Our Most Precious Gift
The Mind: is the most interesting part of the human body. Professionals in the field of psychology have studied and experimented with the mind, ending with positive results to support their theories or negative results which led to failure. Some may have experienced a combination of both. What a fascinating subject interfaced with complexity! We are unique because of our minds. To analyze, to think and to feel is our most precious gift, yet it can turn into tragedy. As I write this, I can feel an appreciation of and for the mind. The mind performs tasks of problem solving, whether it be simple or complex. It can work out complex mathematical equations or it can use common sense to reason out life's tasks at hand.
As a writer, my mind invents interesting scenarios, as many writers experience. Imagination holds the key as we piece together our ideas for non-fiction and fiction. Inventors employ imagination when they construct an item for the purpose of human use. The cave dweller of prehistoric times used his or her imagination in the construction of basic and necessary tools. Our minds have given humans, both indigenous and modern, ways to cope with day to day and future survival.

Analyzing Automatic Thoughts
Suppose we create a scenario where an Activating Event has occurred. Referring to the previous link, it explains our belief as to what had happened, the Meaning We Give To The Event, and the consequences stirring human Emotion.Take into consideration a person's background, for instance his or her life experiences, how that person was raised, values whether they are religious and or family and so on. Past life is a tremendous influence on the individual and molds what judgement this person may decide upon.
Thought: Danger is ahead and I do not know what to do. This person is feeling the Emotion of anxiety and fear.
Thought: Someone has stolen my lunch from the refrigerator and it ticks me off! This person is feeling the Emotion of anger and frustration.
Thought: My house has burnt to the ground! What should I do! This person is feeling the Emotion of depression.
These three examples of different scenarios illustrate to the reader how individuals, especially those who are afflicted with anxiety, depression, phobias and anger issues come to their conclusions and their reactions.

Fact Versus Perspective
Fact Versus Perspective: In Cognitive (thoughts) Behavioral (actions) Therapy patients are taught analyzing skills to deal with negative thoughts and feelings. This type of therapy is used for sufferers of depression, anxiety, phobias and anger issues because these patients or clients have the ability to be able to introspect and rationalize no matter how difficult it is for them. Changing patterns of thought, feeling and reaction is no simple task. I once heard a young man telling his mother a joke which went like this: Question: How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb? Answer: One, and the light bulb has got to want to change. How much truth is in that simple humorous riddle? Upon my discovery I feel that there is some truth in it.
Changing patterns of thoughts and feelings is a herculean job. For one reason the inhibitions can kick in when the person attempts a change. It can be a frightening process to let go. The patient or client may look for something or someone to cling onto. It is a positive move to focus on being a participant in an individual or group therapy setting. C-B-T is usually a short term type of therapy, but in some small cases there are some individuals who may spend a longer time in therapy. Group and individual therapy is a positive alternative for those in need of change since it focuses on a rational analytical view. The participants would be in a supportive environment and are not treated in a judgmental way. Charting the client's mood changes on a daily basis is a self help responsibility of the individual. Each participant, depending on the way the therapist handles each session, receives a paper charting the daily mood on a one (meaning negative) to nine or ten (meaning positive) scale. At each weekly meeting the therapist asks questions concerning mood, sleep patterns, eating patterns, taking medication as prescribed, etc. and these questions are directed to the attention of every one.

Change Using Our A-B-C-D's
Referring back to Activating Events, Thoughts and Emotion is the A-B-C-D Method. I will describe further what this method teaches.
- A is the activating event. In other words what had happened.
- B is the belief you are having concerning the event. In other words what you have convinced yourself about what has happened.
- C is the consequence. In other words this is a result of the thought you had.
- D is the dispute. In other words how you dispute that thought.
For example: John is experiencing depression. He has discovered that his LDL cholesterol is high.
- A: John has high cholesterol which is a fact.
- B: Thoughts concerning his health range from high cholesterol making him feel sad to know he has to make a major change in his life.
- C: The consequence results in John feeling that the situation is hopeless (depression).
- D: The dispute is that he feels he cannot change his way of thinking.
If John can talk back to that negative way of thinking, he will realize that having high cholesterol is not the "end of the world". He can alter his diet and get more exercise.
Think of this phrase as a motivator:"Where there is a will, there is a way". The path leads to a better appreciation of one's self.
