Numbers are everywhere in math and they can be sorted into a variety of different titles and attributes.
It all starts with ten very simple things. They are one of the first concepts we teach children at a young age. My two year old like to sing song them. They are Digits
The digits are any of these ten numbers that all other numbers are created from 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.
What Type of Number is it?
Integer - all positive or negative numbers and zero
integers do not include fractions, decimals, or mixed numbers
Natural or Counting Numbers - The positive integers we use for counting 1,2, 3,4
Consecutive Numbers - numbers that are next to each other in order
Positive and Negative Numbers
Positive Numbers - any number greater than zero, to the right of zero on a number line.
Positive numbers are assumed positive without a sign in front of the numbers unlike negative numbers but is it not wrong to write a + sign in front of a positive number.
Negative Numbers - Any number less than zero or to the left of zero on the number line.
Negative numbers must all have a minus sign in front of the number
Even & Odd Numbers
Any integer (theres that word again!) that can be divided by 2 without a remainder is an Even Number
That means that any integer that ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 is an even number.
Any integer that cannot be divided by 2 without leaving a remainder is an odd number.
Any integer that ends in 1,3,5,7,9 is an odd number.
Prime & Composite Numbers
Prime - a number that can only be divided by 1 and itself.
2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 and so on
note that 2 is the only even prime number
Composite - Any number that has more than two factors.
1 is neither prime nor composite!
