What is envy and how can you get out of it?
Envy is a dangerous attitude
Envy is a serious issue which could take a life
Envy is a negative feeling. A resentful longing aroused by others quality, possession or success. If someone is good at performing their job, the colleague, who is working with him is not happy with that. Envy causes so much trouble to a human being. The first murder in the world took place because of envy.
Some examples of envy and its effects
Abel and Cain were brothers. Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked on the soil. In the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering, fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering, he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
See, the blessings or favor of God causes envy. Cain could have repented and do good in the coming days when he found that he is not looked favorably by God. Instead of doing good or correcting himself, he did the opposite. If God is pleased with Abel, then Cain should have worked and yielded the favor of God. Instead of going in the right way, Cain takes the wrong way. He destroyed his brother. Eliminating the person who was loved by God is not the solution. Cain was not willing to work for yielding the favor of God. Envy causes trouble, and it brought more curse to humankind.
The Lord said to Cain: “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth. ” It means, when we do wrong, we have to suffer the consequences. Many of the troubles in our life are the consequences of the things we did in the past.
Envy causes to curse and problems. He became a restless wanderer on the earth. Envy is the cause of most of the murders happening in this world even today. Things are not changed. Envy is taking its toll. People are being murdered everywhere.
We are not happy with the success of our neighbors or colleagues. Often we find envy is causing between the people who are knowing each other, and not with the strangers. If a stranger is getting wealthy, we don't mind. But if someone whom we know or someone to whom we are closely associated gets wealthy, we started to get the feeling of envy. We are not bothered if we do not have a car. But when the neighbor gets a new car, we feel the desire to have an even better car or we wish the neighbor to broke his car. That kind of feeling is envy. If you are happy to see the broken car of your neighbor, you are under the influence of envy.
When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!” See here Rachel got a bad feeling.
Out of envy, Joseph was thrown into an empty cistern and then sold out to Midianite Merchants by his brothers. What is it to his brothers, if Jacob loved Joseph more than others? They could have to lead a life without envy. Instead of loving, they hated Joseph and sold him to Midianite Merchants.
King Saul run after David when the young girls sang "Saul has killed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands." Here we need to notice the attitude of David towards Saul. David's right attitude towards King Saul helped David to think right and act right even in the time of troubles.
It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, with three chief ministers over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss. Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the chief ministers and the satraps by the exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. At this, the chief ministers and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.
See how the chief ministers and the satraps got envious and brought trouble to Daniel. But at last, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children.
From all the above examples, it is clear that the victims of the act prompted by envy are those people who do good. At the same time, those who do bad are influenced by the feeling of envy and do more harm to the good and righteous people.
