On the Ivory Coast where the slaves came from, a woman who was to be married was intentionally overfed so that when wedding day came, she would be immaculately curvy. So, there we have the cultural difference that stands even today. Sir-mix-a-lot proclaims, "I like BIG BUTTs and I cannot lie!" and it's still true today.
The goal today is to be slim and yet still have the nice round bottom that Sir-Mix-A-Lot demanded. If you take Carmen Electra pics from the eighties and compare them with pics from the nineties, you'll see that a nice bottom is something that can be obtained without genetic change.
