Anatomy and Physiology Coloring Pages and Coloring Books - Coloring ATLAS
Anatomy and Physiology Coloring Books - for Kids and College Students
This page is a comprehensive guide to coloring books about Anatomy and Physiology. These are great resources for learning anatomy. I used them in college, and loved it. It helped me learn in a way that was calming and fun, instead of frustrating and boring.
You will also find lots of free printable coloring pages having to do with all facets of the anatomy of the human body, such as muscles, skull, bones, nerves, heart, lung, brain and spinal cord.
Most of this page is geared towards adult and college level learning, but at the bottom of the page I do have some recommendations for children, adolescents and high school learners (be in class or home schooled). This page is full of educational resources for all ages.
Coloring to Learn Anatomy?
Really?
A great way to learn Anatomy and Physiology is through Coloring books. During the coloring process, the muscles, bones, nerves, and other structures as well as other information are colored, and the information is thought about, and the brain can gather the info for storage in different ways - kinesthetic (learning by doing and moving) The Optical (Vision) Cortical (thinking), Repetition, and it forces the brain to take in the information on BOTH sides of the brain. Your brain has an artistic side and an analytical side. If you are coloring the information, both sides of brain are used, and hence the info goes in stronger.
These coloring books and coloring pages are helpful for both kids (such as home schooled kids, or kids in traditional school that are learning about anatomy and physiology type areas, as well as College Students that are learning the specific details that will soon form the basis of their careers.
I am an occupational therapist. I, myself, used these type of books as part of my learning, and I felt that they helped significantly. Others at the college used them as well, and some of them used them as a "getaway" from the traditional books.
If you are a student learning these topics, I strongly suggest that you get one of these books to help you hard wire the info, in a fun way.
THE Anatomy Coloring Book
This is by far the most common and popular coloring book for college students. It is the one that I had and the one that my college professors recommended. I learned a lot from coloring this book.
Coloring Atlas - aprox $20.00
Price usually matters significantly to college students. Students learning anatomy can benefit from a coloring book drastically. These are the higher end priced, and still they are about 20 bucks. These books, as the more expensive ones, are still much less expensive than the TEXT book and the ATLAS.
Graduation?
Are you wondering - What do I get for a graduation present for someone going to college for:
PHYSICAL THERAPY
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
MEDICAL SCHOOL
NURSING
PHARMACY
RADIOLOGY / XRAY
Netter's Anatomy Coloring Book - Known for his anatomical drawings
Netter is has a way of making anatomy understandable. His pictures are clear and easy to follow. His atlas is the one we use in our therapy clinic when showing things to our patients. --- For less than 12.00, this is a steal!
Netter's art is so well respected - you can purchase any page from his atlas as a blown up size poster for your clinic.
You can also see many of the images from the netter coloring book here.
The site does not really give it justice - His stuff is very intricate though, and some people prefer a simpler pic to color. This website does, though, give you a peek into the art of Netter's Anatomy.
I can go more than $10 but Keep it under $15 please - Buy Midrange Priced
Many people like to go middle of the range for price - these are still pretty inexpensive - Under $15
Use both sides of Your Brain when you learn anatomy!
The brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and the full neurological system is very intricate and difficult to master.
The skeleton, including skull and 216 bones, all have many parts with separate names and features to learn.
The blood vessels and circulatory system are complicated in design.
The many vital internal organs such as heart, lungs, liver etc. are unique and have a lot of distinguishing components and functions to understand.
These are all ares that require a lot of time, effort and energy to learn.
It is recommended to put this info into memory as strongly as possible. That means in as many different ways as possible - so don't just read the info in a Text, or look at a picture in an atlas - DO ! - Coloring this information will use the "creative" part of your brain to learn as well!
For more information on the differences of how you use each side of your brain - click on the picture - it will take you to a great website on that topic.
For learning - try your best to put the info in to BOTH sides of your brain to get the best recall on the test, and later in career!
What Do I Use To Color In These Anatomy Coloring Books? Crayons? - No, Colored Pencils!
Take it from me - you will NOT want to use regular crayons - the color does not stay in place well with those. Get yourself a NICE set of colored pencils. You will be happy you did. Have a great time coloring!

The anatomy coloring books are not very expensive in general, and they make for a great graduation present. The graduate might chuckle a bit when they get a coloring book, but they will see in time, that it is a very useful learning tool.
For a mom that might be wanting a sentimental present, representing the days of their childhood, coloring with Mom, or their love of coloring, and also how they are grown up ... and going to college, it may be the PERFECT present.
Also, please note that the professor/college usually tells the students exactly what books to purchase. The coloring book, though, is usually optional, and they suggest you get one, but do not give assignments in it, so any one would be OK. Rest assured, the book will be the right one, as any will help and none are usually required.

Physiology
Once you have learned where everything is - why not learn how they work ?
These are more coloring books that discuss the physiology of the human anatomy. Several of them are made by same authors as the anatomy books above and compliment them well.
If buying only one, I would go with Anatomy as I found them more helpful, but if you love the coloring - why not do the physiology too ...
Free and printable coloring anatomy pages - Appropriate for Adult or College Student
If you just want to try a page or two before you buy a book, then try one of these printable coloring pages.
If you are interested in this though, I strongly suggest purchasing a book above. The quality of the coloring pages in those books are so much better than any printable pages. They range from as little as five bucks new (and 16 cents from some secondary sellers) to about 20 bucks.
I know free and printable sounds great, but for a college student learning anatomy the books are comprehensive, and they are exactly what you need. I suggest this link mainly so you get a few places to peek and see a little bit more of what to expect.
- The eye, spine, and brain all have lines for you to label the structures - great for teaching and le
these images are a bit more advanced than the ones in the children's section These are all excerpts from the coloring books on this page - it can give you a peek at netter, anatomy coloring book, and Kaplan (each image is credited from which book it - Skeleton, brain, heart, skull, back side, front of body, etc...
these images are similar to netter, but not identified. Fairly detailed, although listed on kids coloring website.
The Brain - Neuroanatomy
These books specifically are about the brain. Neurological System is very difficult to learn as it is very complex. I found drawing the structures to be helpful. The last book in this section is not a coloring book, but a DRAWING book. I found that more helpful. Coloring though was also good for brain structures.
Neurological System - Free Printable Coloring Pages - Brain, Brain Stem and Spinal Cord
These images are not all quite as high level as the coloring books - but free and printable, and may be useful for younger learners. Beginners in higher levels may find these images useful for practice for labeling etc.
- Brain
simple brain pic - good for kids or for black and white simple image print - likely not something for college student to color as it is not detailed or labeled - Spinal Cord
simple spinal cord - matches the brain directly above this link - does show nerve roots but no labels - Brain Stem
This is more detailed but in same series as the brain and spinal cord (same source) - it could be used as practice in labeling as it does show all parts

Kids LOVE to color. and they can learn by doing it. This is a homeschooler's dream!
Most of the books featured above were aimed at the college level. They would be way to complicated for a child or middle school student. Even most high school students might find those overwhelming. (of course there are those honor students that are ahead of their peers...)
For the younger students, learning anatomy in a less advanced manor - these are my suggestions:
Coloring Pages - Free and Printable - Simple General Anatomy for Kids
These are geared more for kids than college students - most images are grossly drawn and the general idea is conveyed, specific structures not necessarily labeled or identified.
