why do i get frowned upon for speaking Spanish to my children in public?
I once had a woman tell me in a department store, "Children need to learn English." This of course was after she heard me speak Spanish to my younger child while trying to pacify him with a bottle.
Because if you want to live in America, and actually BE an American, you and your children need to use and become proficient in English. Learning and using the language of the U.S.A. is a great way to assimilate into American culture. I am American born and bred, but I work as a Spanish teacher in a public school; if the students are not highly proficient in English, they should NOT be forced to study Spanish. IMO, one really disturbing aspect of immigration to the U.S.A. is that those coming here retain their own language and culture and create enclaves where it is like they never left their country of origin except for the freedoms America allows its citizens.

Why are so many people saying "Speak English only"? It makes that person sound so racist! USA is supposed to be a melting pot of different cultures, races, and LANGUAGES! Shame on anyone who says "Speak English only"!

If you were able to learn a foreign language without any effort, which language would you choose to speak and why?
