Butterfly Days

Have you ever heard of any Butterfly Days? If not you must be asking, "what are Butterfly Days"? I am going to tell you what Butterfly Days are and I am also going to let you know when these special days are. My lens will share a few facts about the elusive butterflies that, I hope, you don't know already. I will also talk about how to attract butterfly to your garden by planting some plants that attract butterfly to them.

I have always been a fan of the Lepidoptera, and I hope you will become one too. (The What? Lepidoptera, that's a big, fancy, Latin name for a butterfly!) That's of course, if you aren't one already. The butterfly, like the bee, is a very important part of our eco-system and they must be protected. They aren't just pretty little things, they perform a very important function that man depends upon without even thinking of. Mankind would be in big trouble if anything were to happen to the butterflies and the bees...but the bees are a subject for another lens, so I will stick to just the butterfly for the rest of this one. I hope you enjoy my lens, my pictures and the interesting facts I am going to share with you.

I am not only going to tell you what is so much fun about June 19th, and talk a bit about butterfly gardening, I am also going to show you some butterfly videos, gift ideas and even some e cards made for Butterfly Day for you to send out to your friends and family.

And I Did

The first is March 14th and it's called Learn About The Butterfly Day. I found mention of it at Holiday Insights web site. The site went on to explain that March is a perfect time for Learn About The Butterfly Day since it will help us to learn about these important insects before they start to fly from flower to flower to flower in the spring and summer months.

The big butterfly holiday is on June 19th. Butterfly Day is a day that is set aside to celebrate the simple, beautiful butterfly. An insect, but one that is so fragile, beautiful and important to man that we are literally in awe of these creatures. I don't know anything as fragile as a butterfly's wing, yet this tiny insect can fly at speeds of up to 12 miles per hour. How does it ever manage to do that? Some butterfly cross the nation on their annual migration to Mexico, now that's quite an amazing feat.

In the next section of this page you are going to find the names and dates of some towns and cities that held a Butterfly Day celebration last year, but I don't know if these celebration days will happen again. But I will keep checking to find the new dates as they are announced, so if there are going to be Butterfly Days planned for 2012, I will update this lens with that information.

I found many web sites telling about Butterfly Days and exhibits, where better to find them than on a link list where all you have to do is click tovisit them.

You can learn all about the right garden plants that will attract butterflies in these very helpful books. Make sure to do a bit of research on the flowers and plants that will grow well in your area and find out which are the best ones to attract those beautiful butterflies. OHHH....and remember to take some pictures to show us how great your garden looks...maybe you will get some pictures with some butterflies in them!

Watch this interesting video about Up Yonda Farm. Up Yonda is an environmental education center and nature preserve in Bolton Landing, New York. This video shows us the butterfly farm they have there.

Planting a butterfly garden can be pretty simple. You just have to plant the flowers and plants that attract your local butterflies. I say, "Local Butterflies", since there is no point in trying to attract butterflies that live in New Jersey if you live in Texas...you've got to attract those Texan Butterflies! Do a bit of research and find out what it is that your local butterfly need to survive and what's their favorite plant to eat. Then plant them!

I love to watch butterfly and I also enjoy learning about them and their life cycle. Not everyone does, but I think that most people do enjoy watching these brightly colored insects flit about and I think they must be as curious about the butterflies as I am. So I decided to put it to the question....
