fairy of the forest
It happened many summers ago but it's a story I will not ever forget. My family and I had just moved into our new home in the mountains. It was a quaint little house nestled among the trees with a thickening forest at the edges of our yard. It was a midsummer's night, very hot, and the tree frogs and cricket song filled the night air. We were roasting marshmallows over a campfire my father built in the backyard and our chatter and laughter mixed with the sounds of the evening. Suddenly I saw something near the edge of the woods; a tiny glow of light that seemed to flicker and dance among the branches of the trees. I left my family by the fire and slowly moved towards it, trying not to frighten whatever it was away. I held my breath as I got closer and could feel my heart racing in my chest. What was it? It took no notice of me and carried on its dance. Nearer...nearer...OH! Suddenly I found myself staring at the most beautiful...
Fairy!
She was very tiny, no bigger than a thimble. Her hair was long and the color of pure gold. It seemed to reflect our firelight. Her eyes sparkled and were the palest blue I've ever seen. Her wings looked as though they were spun from the finest silk; they matched the blue of her eyes. I couldn't move! Nevre before had I seen something so magical. All at once she stopped and looked at me...hovering in the night air...her wings slowly beating. Then, in an instant, she smiled at me, bent her head as if to say good bye, and flew off into the darkness of the forest. I stood and watched as the tiny glow got farther and farther away and disappeared completely into the summer night. Every night for the rest of that summer I went out to the edge of the woods, hoping to see her again, but that was not to be. It's been many years now and I still look, hoping to catch just one more glimpse of the beautiful fairy of the forest.
