The "fiery serpent" seems on track to be totally eliminated in the next few years.
Since there is no extra-human host population, this terrible affliction should cease to exist with the cure of the last human case. The number of human cases, if I recall correctly, is now in the low hundreds, and dropping rapidly.
The work of the governments of the affected countries, the World Health Organization, and the Carter Center is really admirable.

A correction, though--I was a bit too optimistic. The last reported number of cases--from 2009--was actually 3,190. Still, given that it used to be 3.5 million, the handwriting does appear to be on the wall.
And it's saying something really, really positive.
