What purpose do wasps and hornets serve?

Virtually every insect has a purpose - Bees make honey...most insects pollinate but what do wasps and hornets do?

Kill and eat flies and garden pests, it is said that the inhabitants of an average wasp's nest consume 1 ton of flies a year.

Wasps and hornets also help pollinate flowers. While they aren't attracted to flowers in the same way bees are, they do sometimes land on them to take a rest. When they do so they get pollen on their wings and body, which they might then transfer to another flower, or another part of the same flower.
