How does anesthesia work when preventing our brains from registering pain?
There are multiple medications for anesthesia. However, the premise is that they cause a massive decrease in central nervous system (CNS) activity. This effectively causes sedation from which the patient is not aware of their surroundings or pain. In addition, IV analgesics such as fentanyl may be used in conjunction to modulate and decrease pain feedback in a sedated patient.
