What causes a gnat infestation?
How do you get rid of them?
Gnats are attracted to excess moisture. They can hover around indoor and outdoor plants where they lay eggs in the soil. They swarm around lakes and ponds, and they are often mistaken for other insects in lawns. You didn't say where they are, so it is hard to suggest a way to get rid of them.
Moisture is it all right. A serious gnat infestation might suggest a leak of some sort. I will never forget the day when we had finally located the source of our gnats (which had infested us for about 1/3 of a year)... Apparently our kitchen dish washer had been leaking under the counter or some time, and the gnats had found the tiniest of cracks between the floor and the counter bottom to crawl under and breed in there. There were scores of them. We had no idea until we tore the kitchen apart for remodeling... Gross!
If you are having a problem with gnats indoors, try pouring some bleach down your drains in your sinks. The exterminator that comes by my workplace told me that this will get rid of most of the small, flying, annoying insects that sometimes get indoors during warmer weather. The drains and pipes will hold stagnant materials and moisture which is appealing to the gnats. While you cannot get rid of the moisture, you can get rid of the stagnation with the bleach.
