Creative Uses for LED Lights

Updated on February 9, 2017

Play with LEDs

LEDs are energy efficient, long lived lights that can be used for hundred if not thousands of uses. This lens is all about the lighter side of LEDs, building creative projects using these great little lights.

Why My Interest in LEDs

I've been thinking for some time how cool it would be to be able to light my sculptures in creative ways. Because of their longevity and low power usage LEDs (light emitting diodes) seemed like the best bet.

Finally I've gotten some LEDs and I'm in the process of learning a bit more about how to work with them. My experience level in this is basically a couple middle school science projects concerning electricity and setting up a simple circuit. This should be an interesting experience.

My plan is to put LEDs into my Selkie Emerging sculpture to look like water reflecting up onto her body as she rising out of the water.

LED Projects

Obviously I'm not the only one who likes to play with LEDs. There are numerous projects online for using LEDs, here's a small sampling of projects I think are really great.

@anonymous: I don't know, all my projects have been for indoor use so I've not played with solar stuff. For the color changing here's a store that sells leds that change color if you want them programmable that's well beyond my experience level but Instructables might have some projects along those lines that would give you a starting point.

I've looked everywhere! Does anyone know where to buy solar led units (battery/light/casing) for outdoor craft projects. I know I can use stake-lights, but wondering about the compact little units found in many outdoor crafts at stores. Also color changing units. Seeing as how many of these run a few dollars, unit and decoration ... should be possble to buy relatively cheap. Right? Sure has me stumped though. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. (also would like collector and light to point same way - seen these before on bought crafts) Eric

@BuyLEDs: LED are very practical for homes and businesses. With the reduced energy up to 85 % and little to no maintenance for many years they are very practical.

There are plenty of things you can do with LEDs like making an art piece. Perhaps an area that lights up as it's touched in relation to the rest of the grid.

Great Lens ! Hydroponics gardening makes use of develop lights to light the plants thoroughly in purchase for photosynthesis to happen and for the plants to expand and thrive. Lights is vital to every single kind of indoor gardening position, for the reason that lacking adequate light, the plants will be stunted and not develop to their full prospective. LED grow lights can be utilized to decent impact in an indoor plant developing circumstance.

[in reply to John J. Farias] Search online for "flexible LED tube", there are several places online you can buy them. They come in multiple dimensions, some that I was looking at come equipped with standard electrical plugs. You could wire them onto your sculpture or maybe glue them with something that flexes like silicone, then run a small extension cord is the one on the strip isn't long enough. Hope that helps.

I would like to use some different colored LED lights to place behind my metal wall art sculptures. Do the lights come in small round flexible tubes? What are the dimensions and where can I purchase them. Does anyone know how to attach them to the backs of my metal wall sculpture and how do you turn them on?

      Thanks for all your help.

Sheryl, wonderful Lens on LEDs. I think you are on to something with your artistic design and the use of LEDs. They are catching on and they are even safer then CFLs. I am working on a site for LEDs and would love to come back and glean more information from you. Thank you.
