Early in our homeschool journey, my daughter expressed the desire to learn to speak Chinese. Shortly after we began to meet with a native speaker for private lessons, I got an iPhone. Much to our delight - we have found many Mandarin Language Apps with which she can practice her growing language skills. This lens highlights the many applications we love and use most frequently.

Available in both Lite and Pro versions ... the Lite version is ad supported and free (I obviously have this version) while the Pro version includes audio (I will be upgrading). The Lite version is simplified only while the Pro version provides an option of simplified or traditional Chinese.
The game is played on a grid, from 5x5 to 9x9, where Chinese characters are displayed. You look for meaningful words, phrases and sentences on the grid lined up in a line (horizontal, vertical and diagonal) with the help of the prompt at the bottom. You have a choice for the prompt: Chinese character, English or Pinyin.
E-son Putonghua Game is an educational game developed to help players learn Putonghua in a fun way. Players develop their listening, memoriziing and identifying skills when E-son is sent to the supermarket to get some groceries for his mother. Players help him to identify the items which are read out in Putonghua or showed in Pinyin and then put them in E-son's cart.

In everyday use Mandarin refers to Standard Chinese or Standard Mandarin (Putonghua / Guoyu / Huayu), which is based on the particular Mandarin dialect spoken in Beijing.
