Introduction:
According to the International Journal of Scientometrics, Info metrics And Bibliometrics, the total number of universities in the world is counted to be 17036. The field of global ranking for universities is intensely competitive. The world league is led by the University of Cambridge, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University and the University of Oxford. There are two methodologies of world university rankings.
a. QS World University Rankings; and
b. Academic Ranking of world universities.
QS World University Rankings is based on the following criteria:

AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES:
The total number on Universities in Australia is 42 out of which 38 are public universities while remaining 04 are private universities.
FIVE Australian universities have been rated among the world’s top 50. Eight Australian institutions made it into the top 100 – 23 are in top 500 – in the QS World University Rankings released on 5th of Sep 2011.
Top of the local league was Australian National University, ranked 26 in the world, followed by the University of Melbourne at 31.
Australia’s worst fall was registered by Flinders University, down 48 rankings to 299 globally. It was among the group of 13 whose rankings dropped, while nine institutions improved over past year. The University of South Australia showed the best improvement with a jump of 25 places.
Overall something like 60 % of Australian universities is in the top 500 that shows the strength of the Australian system by world standards. The good news for Australia is that it performs very well on both rankings and the Australian universities conform to what some call the global university model. The area of traditional weakness weakness for Australia in the QS rankings is student-to-staff ratios

PAKISTANI UNIVERSITIES:
The total number of universities in Pakistan is 132 out of which 73 are public universities while 59 are private universities. However only 127 out of 132 are functional according to the latest survey and remaining 5 are no longer functional.
According to the QS rankings released on 5th Sep 2011, the top university in Pakistan is the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) with a global ranking of 366.
Other than that Pakistan does not have any other university among the top 500 in the QS ranking. However the Lahore University of Management and Sciences (LUMS), UET Lahore, and the University of Lahore fall within the bracket 551-600 among the QS Rankings.
According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) Pakistan does not have any university among the top 500 except NUST.

INDIAN UNIVERSITIES:
The total number of universities in India is recorded to be 481 out of which 254 are state universities, 130 are deemed institutes, 58 are private universities and 39 are central universities.
According to the QS Rankings India has got 7 universities among the top 500 with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)leading the ladder having a global ranking of 218.
In the Academic Ranking of World’s Universities, Indian institute of Science is the only one among the top 500 and has a global ranking between 301-400.

LUMS E egnd the University of Lahore fall within the bracket 551-600 among the QS Rankings.
According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) Pakistan does not have any university among the top 500 except NUST.
