Worldwide, amphibians are in peril. Some of the reasons include habitat destruction, pollution and diseases. It is up to all of us to do our part to reduce pollution and to plant areas in our yards that will provide favorable habitat for this important part of the food chain.

Green Tree Frog (Hyla cinera) by lalagniappe on Zazzle

The colorful and cute Green Tree Frog is the Louisiana State Amphibian. (Ha, I bet you thought it was the Bullfrog!) The calls of these small frogs can be heard in wetlands, forests and backyards throughout Louisiana.

Bullfrog Tadpole Public Domain
Bullfrog Tadpole Public Domain

Bullfrog and Bullfrog tadpole photos are public domain.

Bullfrogs are the largest frog in Louisiana. Even their tadpoles are enormous. They will eat just about anything that they can fit into their large mouths. Their deep jug-o-rum bass calls can be heard throughout the wetlands during the warm seasons of the year.

This is the frog whose legs are most commonly used in Cajun and Creole recipes like fried frog legs.

Leopard frogs and Bronze frogs are two members of the family of true frogs that inhabit Louisiana. Both are a little smaller than the Bullfrog.

@TanoCalvenoa: You must be a quick study. My quizzes are "open book" and I try to provide enough information for even the novice to succeed. I don't like pop quizzes. Thanks for commenting.

I'd say I got 7/9 rather than 7/10 because most non-Louisianans (I'm a Californian) wouldn't have any idea what frogs are in Louisiana.

I'm a Bronze Frog.....and pretty proud of it! This is excellent, informative and beautiful. The video is delightful! I'm a country girl at heart and loved the sounds of frogs at night. I can't believe that some people find their night songs's music to my ears!

That was a fun quiz and educational too, which is a winning combination! I got 60% and learnt some new things along the way as well as discovering I'm not a total dunce on amphibians. :)

I love frogs and toads. My husband often bring them into the house, unwittingly, in his orchids. In the evening, we often hear them "singing" to us, and have to go chase them down. They are always the tiny ones, about the size of the tip of your pinky finger. When I was a little girl, in Tarpon Springs, FL, I used to "freak" the other girls out, because I was always catching toads. Congratulations on your intriguing LotD!

@Shades-of-truth: Oh, you used to do that, too? It was always so puzzling to me how big girls could scream & run because of a little toad frog. ;)

This is a great lens. Although I live in Southwest Florida, I recognize most of these frogs. What a great pic of the salamader too. I love the rainy season here in Florida because the frogs sing, chirp and, constantly make noise. Thanks for sharing this info. I really enjoyed listening to the frogs on the computer too.

I love toads, frogs and salamanders - I've been a "frogger" since I was a kid. It's fun to sit out on the patio at night and listen to them sing, and to have a visit from a traveling toad in search of supper just after dark.
