What If the Magic of Skulduggery Pleasant Series Were Real?
Imagine the possibilities
OK, have to admit as a rabid fangirl and fanfiction writing nerd that is a question I have to ask myself often. For those who have yet to read the highly entertaining series it is set pretty much in our modern world, and magic is real. Only mages have to hide from mortals (non-magical people), because they'd either be hunted down and killed or hmm, hunted down and killed.
There are almost endless types of magic and unlike older series such as Dragonlace the magic doesn't tire the user out for the most part. The only thing is that if you work for a Sanctuary like Skulduggery and his loyal combat accessory Valkyrie Cain you usually find yourself up to your neck in trouble, fighting other mages to protect mortals and keep magic hidden.
Add to that a possible lifespan of hundred or thousands of years (it seems to vary depending on the type of magic the sorcerer wields and the will to hang on) and it all sounds dreamy, right? Ah, but sooner or later you must face choices. Especially if you, like Valkyrie were born into a family with no magic being used. Could you leave them behind to live in the world of magic?
WARNING: Hey SP fans! Welcome and this may contain some spoilers from Last Stand of the Dead Men, not massive ones and if you read fanfic you've seen them used by other writers before Landy. Hmmm...

What type of magic would you choose?
To be very basic there are two types of magic to choose from. Elemental, which does exactly what it says it does, and allows the user to control all the elements including the Earth. These type of mages can even learn to do things like flying and the use of Elemental magic is what keeps them young. Though if you aren't part of a Sanctuary (a governing body that protects and polices the mages of a given country) and fighting the bad guys you have to wonder how much use you get out of it.
Adept on the other hand covers an almost endless list of magical talents, each of which can be a separate brach. Necromancy is by far the most impressive as it calls on shadows and the powers of the dead, but since Necromancers have a tendency to be evil and untrustworthy (Valkyrie is an exception) most people don't like them much.
But most Adepts just have a singular talent or several like being able to walk on walls and ceilings, throwing energy, or any skill you could think of. Neither type of magic is better or stronger. It depends on a mage's skill and as most also train in fighting and are good with weapons magic may be a last resort, not a first.
A young mage can practice any type of magic they choose until their Surge, the time when they reach full power. Then they must pick a type of magic and stick with it. So which would you choose?
Elemental or Adept?
Elemental or Adept?
The book that started it all. Get started reading and see why it is one of the best selling books in Ireland. Well mainly because of Skulduggery. Lots and lots of Skulduggery.
Giving up the world of mortals
Once a mage has Surged he or she will age very slowly unless they willingly stop practicing magic. So those with nonmagical backgrounds like Valkyrie must leave the world of mortals at some point. This isn't forced, but the misery of seeing one's loved one's age and wither is hard on both sides and the loved ones tend to grow distant from the mage.
Valkyrie, like every other mage before her will face the need to leave the world of mortals at some point, though some mages, with the best of intentions want the worlds to mix. But it isn't as easy as it sounds. Although there are plenty of other mages to interact with, the problem is they are all you have left after leaving the world of mortals.
This doesn't mean you couldn't still go wherever you pleased, but you couldn't form bonds with mortals. Keep in mind though that if you worked for a Sanctuary this would probably be a good idea anyhow, and not all mages follow these rules all the time. Some marry mortals some are quite open with open or two trusted friends. And no, sadly you can't make people magical.
Even mortals with magic they aren't aware of would be a disaster waiting to happen if their powers were activated.
Could you give up the world of mortals?
The adventure continues. Can the duo survive a dangerous new adventure or will the partnership and friendship collapse under the strain?
A lifespan of centuries
Think of it, you've chosen your type of magic and now you have a lifespan of centuries to look forward to. How would you live your life differently? Would you live in a magical haven and learn to perfect your chosen type of magic? Would you go into a magical business or work in a Sanctuary?
Or would you simply idle away the centuries enjoying life as it came? The idea sounds wonderful but some mages find it rather hard. Even with magical communities you see your friends and those you love grow older. Yes, it takes centuries but it happens. And if you should fall in love with a mage centuries older? Well, you know the drill.
But with the centuries on your side you could do everything you've ever dreamed of. Become fluent in every language on the planet, learn any trade you ever wanted, travel the world repeatedly on grand adventures. You could fight the bad guys, learn new magical skill sets or do anything you desire.
Would you like to live for centuries?
