10 Emotional Songs To Listen To When You Feel Suicidal and Alone
Life gets depressing sometimes. We all know that. But I promise you, there is hope. You'll find it, you'll find strength and happiness again. If you're feeling depressed or suicidal, feel free to shoot me a message, or call the samaritans on 116 123.
However, in a depressing moment, a beautiful song can help lift your mood. Whether you need someone to understand your pain, or to feel like part of a community, the songs on this list are some of my favourites.
Paramore - Fake Happy
This song is so beautiful and moving. It starts slowly, with Hayley Williams saying she feels 'so fake happy,' and how, 'I bet everybody here is fake happy too.' The song builds up, with some extremely emotional lyrics over a great beat. It's the perfect way to represent how it feels to have to pretend to feel happy, and how nobody manages to see the depressions underneath the surface.
Paramore - 26
Another gorgeous song from Paramore's new album. The band reminds you to hold onto hope, but if you can't, that's okay. Williams' beautiful voice conveys so much strong, raw emotion throughout, in a beautiful, moving song about how even in the darkest moments, there is some hope to be found.
(Side note... I would 100% recommend listening to the After Laughter album. There are so many amazing songs on this album to listen to when you feel depressed, such as Rose-Coloured Boy and Caught In The Middle.)
Twenty One Pilots - Screen
Realistically, I could list every single Twenty One Pilots song ever written on this list, but I've chosen my favourite two for when you're feeling low. Their chart-topping, increasingly mainstream presence should not fool you - they're one of the most talented, unique, bands out there, completely deserving of their recognition! Theres a part in this song where Tyler Joseph repeats the line, 'we're broken people,' which I find extremely emotional, because it reminds you that you're not alone in this world. There is a community of people around you who are feeling what you're feeling, even if you don't know it. You'll never have to feel alone when listening to this song.
Twenty One Pilots - Trees
The second song I've chosen is Trees, which is one of my all-time favourites. I rarely make it through listening to this song without tears. Blare it out, and feel the raw emotion pour into your soul as Tyler screams, 'Hello!' with the most moving, heart-pumping, beautiful instrumental sections that I've ever heard.
Of Mice And Men - You're Not Alone
If there's one thing that never fails to make me feel even the slightest bit better, it's Austin Carlile screaming, 'you're not alone, you're with me!' There's so much power and emotion behind every word in this song, and he delivers every single validating phrase perfectly.
Three Days Grace - The End Is Not The Answer
The clue is in the name. The end is not the answer - ending your life will not help. No matter how much pain you're in, no matter how much suffering you've endured, there is always hope. Even if you can't see it anymore. Don't give up. You will find your happiness.
My Chemical Romance - Welcome To The Black Parade
Ah, the epitome of the emo days, the black eyeliner and military jackets - so much nostalgia! But in all honestly, this song is brilliant in every way. This song never fails to get me pumped up, it's like an instant hit of nostalgic, feisty, energetic vibes. So many emotions!
311 - Beyond The Gray Sky
A much less well-known song, but amazing nonetheless - this song promises that you'll one day see the blue beyond the darkness in the sky you're seeing now. It reminds you that even if you feel like you have to give up your fight to stay alive... find something else you can use as a reason to carry on.
Three Days Grace - Never Too Late
Three Days Grace are appearing again, but you can't deny that they're a very emotional, powerful band with some amazing songs about depression and suicide. No matter where you've come from or what you've been through, it's never too late for things to turn around and get better. This song acknowledges the fact that having people tell you 'it'll be alright' doesn't always help, and in these moments, all you need to do is simply stay alive. (another slight Twenty One Pilots reference... But really. It's an important message.)
Slipknot - Snuff
Slipknot - the screamo metal band with the scary masks, I know. But this song is completely different to anything else by them. It's slower, simpler, and intensively emotive. My words will never do justice to the power and passion behind this song... Listen to it. You'll understand what I mean instantly.
