The Top 10 1990s Cartoon and Animation movie list

Updated on May 27, 2013

Great cartoon movies from the 90s

Animation and cartoon movies are awesome because they are fun for both grown-ups and children alike. Some of the best ones were made in the 1990s. I have compiled a list of the greatest animated/cartoon movies of the 90s and arranged them in a top 10.

You will notice that Disney cartoons/animation movies are featured heavily on the list. That is because they are superstars when it comes to creating funny, heartwarming and most of all story driven cartoons and animation films.

I did however also find room for other film producers on the top ten.

Have a look and see if you agree with my choices for the best animation/cartoon releases in the 1990s.

Anastasia (1997) - Best Cartoon or Animated movie of the 90s nr. 10

Anastasia
Anastasia
An evil sorcerer curses the Tsar family and they are forced to flee their palace and their home as a revolution erupts. Only grandmother Empress Marie Feodorovna and Anastasia the 8 year old Grand Duchess survives, but are seperated. Anastasia grows up in an orphanage while her grandmother is looking for her offering a huge reward to those that find her. It is a great story of love and of family, it is beautifully drawn and while it is not a film by Disney it does have a Disneyesque quality to it. Great story depth and charming, funny and interesting characters.

The Swan Princess (1994) - Best Cartoon or Animated movie of the 90s nr. 9

The Swan Princess (Special Edition)
The Swan Princess (Special Edition)
Derek is a prince and Odette is a princess and their parents are desperately trying to make the two fall in love so the two kingdoms can unite. Their attempts seems to be in vain, however when an evil sorcerer kills Odette's father and abducts her, Derek becomes obsessed with tracking her down and freeing her. The story is loosely based on the ballet Swan Lake and is voiced by Jack Palance, John Cleese, Steven Wright, and Sandy Duncan. While the movie has received mixed reviews the story is enjoyable and the side character Jean-Bob the frog (John Cleese) is so funny that it pulls the movie into the top 10 greatest cartoons of the 90s

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) - Best Cartoon or Animated movie of the 90s nr. 8

The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
This is Disneys story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Quasimodo. Because of his deformed appearance he shuns the public as he is afraid they would make fun of him. That is until he meets Esmeralda, a beautiful gypsy girl. A friendship forms between the two, however Esmeralda is ordered arrested and now it is up to Quasimodo to help her escape.

The Prince of Egypt
The Prince of Egypt
This 1990s movie is the first animated film by DreamWorks Animation and is an adaptation of the Book of Exodus. The movie starts out by showing the Pharaohs hunt for newborn baby boys and how Moses mother hides him and sends him down the Nile. From here on the film follows the life of Moses. The movie received positive reviews and is worth watching both for children and for grown-ups. Prince of Egypt won the Academy Awards for Best Original song in 1999 for "When you Believe" performed by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

A Bug's Life (1998) - Best Cartoon or Animated movie of the 90s nr. 6

A Bug’s Life (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
A Bug’s Life (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
The evil Grasshoppers are forcing the ants to harvest food for them in this computer animated Pixar/Disney movie from 98. Our hero Flik sets out to find a group of warriors that can help the colony fight against the oppression. The characters of this film are lovable, charismatic and very funny. You are guarenteed a belly ache from laugther after watching these 95 minutes of hilarious dialogue and animated action.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) - Best Cartoon or Animated movie of the 90s nr. 5

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Secret of the Ooze / Turtles in Time / TMNT) [Blu-ray]
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Secret of the Ooze / Turtles in Time / TMNT) [Blu-ray]
While technically only partly animated, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just couldn't be left out from the top 10 animated movies of the 1990s. I don't think that there is a child that grew up in the 90s that doesn't remember the pizza loving tortoise/human mutants who fought crime (and sometimes each other for fun). In this first movie about the Ninja Turtles, they go up against the Foot Clan, led by the infamous Shredder. Action and lots of fun are the components of TMNT movies and the first one is no different. Cowabunga!

Beauty and the Beast(1991) - Best Cartoon or Animated movie of the 90s nr. 4

Beauty and the Beast (Three-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging)
Beauty and the Beast (Three-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging)
A vain prince denies shelter to an old lady, she turns out to be a fairy and curses him with the looks of a beast. He can only break the spell if he can find someone who sees beyond his hideous looks and learns to love him for his personality. Belly is the daughter of an inventor and with her father she lives a quiet life in a little town, however she dreams of adventures and fairy tales. This Disney movie has the exact right balance between great story, funny characters and beautiful drawings aswell as music. It is an experience to watch and an enjoyable video night for the entire family. That is why it is nr. 4 on the top 10 best animated cartoon movies of the 1990s.

Toy Story (Two-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging)
Toy Story (Two-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging)
What does toy do when no humans are around? Toy Story will tell you. It is the first feature film made entirely with Computer Generated Graphics(CGI) and was made by Disney and Pixar. Woody is Cowboy doll and the leader of the toys that belong to Andy Davis a little boy. Disaster strikes when Andy receives Buzz Lightyear a new cool toy and Woody is worried that he is no longer the favourite doll. I can't say much else than watch this if you haven't already and then go watch the sequels as they are all good.

The Lion King (1994) - Best Cartoon or Animated movie of the 90s nr. 2

The Lion King [Blu-ray]
The Lion King [Blu-ray]
Another Disney film on the list of the best animated movies from the 90s. Lion King set a new standard for what can be accomplished in a cartoon story and picture-wise. Simba is born to be king, however he is chased from his kingdom by his evil uncle scar. Years later he returns in order to reclaim what is truly his. The amount of emotion that Lion King awakens in the viewer is amazing, I bet I am not the only one that has swapped between hysterical laugher to crying my eyes out over this animation. I will go as far as to say it is one of the greatest animation movies ever created.

Aladdin(1992) - Best Cartoon or Animated movie of the 90s nr. 1

Aladdin (Two-Disc Special Edition) [DVD]
Aladdin (Two-Disc Special Edition) [DVD]
The spot as number one best cartoon/animation movies goes to Disneys Aladdin. A street boy name Aladdin falls in love with the Princess. This becomes known by Jaffar, the evil Grand Vizier, who had planned to marry the princess himself in order to become Sultan. To get rid of Aladdin he sends him hunting for a magic lamp, however once Aladdin has the lamp he spots an opportunity to win the girl of his dreams. Genie, Abu, Jaffar and Iago, actually all the characters in this film are hilarious. Especially the Genie who is voiced by Robin Williams is so funny you will laugh at almost every line that comes out of his mouth. The role is perfect for Robin Williams who really gets to use his talent for humor, fast-talking and delivering punchlines just so. This is pure cartoon classic, a must watch and a well deserved number one of this top 10 list.

Disney Aladdin Toys

If the animated movie Aladdin left you wanting for more, then here are some suggestions on toys that can help your child re-enact the fairy tale.

Runners-up for the top 10 animation/cartoon movies of the decade 1990 - These didn't quite make the list, but are still worthy of a mention.

Favorite classic Disney movies and other great animations/cartoons

As I mentioned in the introduction this top 10 over the greatest animated/cartoon films of the 1990s is pretty full of Disney movies. I can't help it though, the films that Disney released in the 90s were fantastic and became instant classics. I remember watching Lion King in the cinema and being stunned by the epicness of the drawings. The landscapes and the huge panoramic views of the Savannah were breathtakingly beautiful and I was amazed that it was all "just a cartoon".

To this date I still watch Aladdin once every few years and it still makes me laugh, which is pretty impressive considering I must have watched the movie 10-12 times.

The voice acting combined with the brilliant script makes it a film you never grow tired of watching.
