21 Jump Street, review
2012, **, R
Starring: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube
Rookie cops Jenko (Channing Tatum, “The Vow,” “Step Up”) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill, “Super Bad,” “Moneyball”) really screw up on their first arrest/drug bust – essentially it went bad and they are sent by their superior to see Captain Dickinson (Ice Cube, “Are We There Yet,” “Friday,” “XXX: State of the Union”) in charge of undercover operations gone bad, so they are assigned to go undercover as high school students and find out who’s supplying a new synthetic drug that recently killed a local teen.
So it’s back to high school for these two guys, and Schmidt is kind of nervous but excited to get another shot at high school, since he was a loser back then, and Jenko is excited because he was a popular kid-bully-jock type who used to pick on Schmidt. But now the two quickly become buddies as cops under cover, back, once again, in high school.
They quickly find out who’s selling the drugs-Eric Molson (Dave Franco – yep younger bro of James Franco, “Super Bad,” “Fright Night” – 2011 version, & TVs “7th Heaven” ), but still fail to report back to Mr. Cube who is selling the drugs to this dude in the school. After getting too involved in high school life and Schmidt finally finding a girl to like him, he realizes he must focus on the job and gets in with the “in crowd,” which helps him and Jenko find the real ring leaders, who happen to be an unsuspecting party they have already run into earlier before they went back to their “teen” years.
The film is filled with funny moments, and you really cant do wrong with Jonah Hill ever, unless you don’t handle stupid slap stick, buddy movie types. Channing is just for eye candy as usual, even the science teacher says, “Let me see your chest,” instead of “test.” LOL. See what did I tell ya, pure eye candy.
A cameo is made by original TV series of “21 Jump Street” alum, Johnny Depp plays (Tom Hanson, but was not credited); sorry no Richard Grieco around in this one. Check this one out for fun, oh and of course if you are Channing Tatum obsessed!
